This is from day 14. Dot in the middle has been the same size for 2 days now. Is it showing the infamous blood ring? I have never seen one before first hand, so I wanted to get confirmation from more experienced folks before removing it...

I was really hoping this particular one would make it...so there is a small degree of emotional hit assoiated with taking it out it if that's what I really need to do for the safety of the other eggs. All of the others are either glowy undeveloped duds or very dark and healthy-looking with visible pulsing. I've read blood ring eggs pose a higher risk than totally undeveloped ones.

If it's not in focus enough then I can try again, but my phone was being really stubborn about focusing in the dark. I feel like even from the thumbnail this one doesn't look good though.

I'm sorry, that egg died a few days ago.

That dark spot usually means the embryo is dead and starting to clump/break down, sorry!

Big bummer...thank you for both for confirming. At least I have five very healthy ones ticking along still. Started with 11 eggs. I guess I should remove the ones that just glow like a lamp too. I have two flocks; the glowies and this one are all from the same flock, while the obviously healthy ones are all from the other flock.

Is it possible to see blood rings at all on dark/thick shells? I have two eggs from the fertility issue flock where it's super hard for me to see much of anything. Just worried whether I could have two other ticking bombs from that flock's eggs.

Blood rings are pretty uncommon and not a reliable way to verify egg viability, if present they are useful but most dead eggs don’t form one. For dark eggs (quail!) I often use the shadow vs lighter areas to verify growth. The shadow should gradually fill the whole egg, especially as hatching approaches, compare eggs in the same batch if unsure. If an egg stinks ditch it, but non stinky dead eggs are unlikely to explode (no gas producing bacteria to build pressure and turn them into bombs).
