Last July we purchased a pair of blue butterscotch call ducks off of eggbid. They are very nice little birds and have laid a good many eggs so far and the hen has just went broody. Now my question is what colors will I get from the offspring? I figured I would get 25% normal butterscotch, 50% blue butterscotch and the last 25% is what I am unsure of. I was wondering if anyone has heard of this color before and could let me know what I can expect. Thanks in advance.

Hi toni

I'm again not too sure what a buterscotch is. Do you have pics, they would help? I found this site http://www.google.com.au/imgres?img...mage_result&resnum=4&ct=image&ved=0CBAQ9QEwAw so will use the birds on it as a guide. They look like light phase wild-type mallards (trout) + blue dilution (likely pure). In other words, little Saxonies. If they are in fact pure for blue dilution (which they look to me to be) then they should breed true to colour. If impure for blue, then you should get 25% trout, 25% butterscotch, & 50% that are possibly similar to lighter versions of blue fawn, the drakes with claret extending onto flanks & shoulder? But I have never seen them (trouts with a single dose of blue) so could be wrong. Other factors are likely involved in creating the patterned effect.

Cheers

Wow, I wasn't aware that there are blue butterscotch call ducks! Could you please post a picture of what they look like? I would love to see them.

I will post pics, I do not know much about them or how they were created so that is why I am asking. I just thought they were a pretty little bird and never heard of them before so I figured I would get them.

If you breed them together you should get some that look more like butterscotch and some that look like the parents..... ......they look like ducks that were bred to create the butterscotch. Raise some ducklings and see what you get.

Yes that is something like I might have expected, much darker blue, particularly noticable on the drake with extended claret along sides & onto shoulder (light phase trait). The duck shows evidence of being light phase with the white facial markings & throat, & also sparser dark markings to feather.

They are heterozygous for blue (as opposed to the butterscotch being homozygous for blue). If your birds are like these then you will breed approx 25% that look like the butterscotch in the link I provided (pure for blue), approx 25% that are without the blue gene altogether & look trout (like a Rouen Clair or trout runner), & approx 50% that look like your blue butterscotch birds (with a single dose of blue dilution).

They are neat little ducks, & I want some. Can you send them to me in Australia when you breed some
