I bought these from my local Tractor Supply in April as blue leghorn pullet chicks. As they started growing, I realized pretty quickly they looked different than any pictures I’ve seen of blue leghorns (or any pictures I’ve found since—I’ve never seen any live ones), but I wanted to wait until they were mature before I sought advice. I’ve scoured the internet but haven’t found a breed that looks like this. I tried several times to get more info about the hatcheries from TSC since these must have been mislabeled, but unfortunately they won’t help. I’ve read that Hoover Hatchery often supplies TSC’s chicks, but I can’t find anything matching these on their site.

They obviously have leghorn characteristics—and look very similar to blue leghorns—but the main part that’s throwing me is the gold/rust color on their necks (and down the front of some) that isn’t in any other pictures of blue leghorns I’ve seen.

Obviously I’ve wondered if they might be a mixed breed, but I just didn’t think Tractor Supply would sell something like that, at least without saying so. The most likely explanation I’ve come up with is that it’s a production hybrid of some kind; I know there are many of them.

They’re just over four months old now, and one or two have started laying white eggs this week.

Thanks very much in advance for any help/advice anybody can offer!

Keelyn

They're Leghorns. They came from Privett hatchery. Privett supplies some TSCs .
They're labeling them "Blue Breasted Brown" Leghorns. As far as I've seen they don't have any pics on their website and they really can't provide much info on them. This is the first year they've offered them.
I raise Leghorns and make new varieties. I have birds with this pattern that I made so I'm familiar with them. They're genetically Blue Gold Duckwing. Same pattern as Brown Leghorns but with blue added.
There's another thread that just started with someone with the same birds.
I'll find it and link it.

Wow, thanks very much for the info! That’s really interesting. And it’s really nice to know for sure what they are.

This.

They are pretty! Are they tame, easy to handle, friendly, or spooky/ skittish?
I think they’re pretty, too. I’d say their temperament is similar to other leghorns I’ve had—flighty and independent. They don’t really want to be handled and have been like that since they were chicks. They look great, though, and a few have already started laying at four months old.

Thank you. That's how my brown leghorns were. I liked the white eggs, but their temperament did not suit mine. It made me sad that they always looked upon us, it seemed, with terror. I won't have them again, I don't think.
