Breeding Northern Bobwhite Quail

Quote:
For me, about 1:3. I've got 15 males and 42 females in a 60 sq. ft. pen. Things will get "testy" with the fellas in the next few weeks to come. I already started noticing it yesterday as are haveing warmer weather, and the days are getting longer. At one point, I think every male in the pen was trying to peck somebody. Yep, the ol' testosterone levels are about to overflow! I expect somebody to be bald-headed by Friday.......

Randall, Do you pull birds out, or just let'em work it out and scoop up the bodys or survivors when its done. When ever I intervene, it either just puts off the fight or creates a power vacuum that is filled by a new bully. My experience has only been with pheasants years ago, not bob whites. Bill

IF I catch the battering in time, I'll move that bird over to a rehab pen. Sometimes, I haven't caught it in time, and in case you've never dealt with it........once blood is drawn, it's like the victim headed to be placed in front of a firing squad. This is where it's best to have some green pine limbs off in one corner for the victim to have somewhere to go hide. Is this the answer to the problem? No. But it will give the guy a little cover instead of running himself to death from all the other bullies. Like I've said before, I honestly wonder if the Superdome would be big enough for a breeding pen when it comes to Bobwhites. It tapers off some in late spring, but boy howdy, when the introduction time arrives, it's can be an all out gang war ...... That's why I was smiling inside this weekend every time I caught one of them mean boogers to go to Kamp Kenmore.

I Routinely Breed Butler Giants In Pairs And Trios In Similar Sized Pens With Few Troubles, Usually If Anything At All I End Up With A Black Widow Or 2... Nasty Lil Wenches They Are

I have mine in trio in pens(color breeding) or colony 1:3.

Now sure other will disagree.....one word " BITS"

I use them if I have trouble with pecking, Not that many ,but when one started ...they get a bit.......BETTER THAN BLOODED OR DEAD BOBS...and no it doesn't hurt them. They are cheap and can be remove anytime. I try not to use them , but if needed in they go.

Oh it will ,but need done with proper tool which remove a large part ot the upper beak, just like big flocks of chickens or pheasants'

Just the bit are cheap, easy to use...PLUS doesn't hurt the bird, or mark them for life.

Bit goes between the beaks, this stops them from being able to pinch the skin...they still eat fine
