Brooder box heat lamp

Always go by the chicks behavior, not some chart! Many of us use heating pads or heat plates instead of lamps for this reason. They are able to get warm when needed but the entire brooder space isn't being heated up. Another option is to get a lower wattage bulb. The bulbs they sell in the feed stores are outrageous in the amount of heat they put out. That way you can still give them heat at night if they need it without cooking them lol

I use a dimmer switch, so i don't have to raise or lower. 20180826_100817.jpg . It's rated for 300 watts. You plug into outlet and then plug light into it. 20180902_080918.jpg . I have a thermometer velcroed to brooder a couple inches from floor. GC

Your brooder looks to be a great size and you would have plenty of room for a Heating Plate or a homemade heating pad cave. It's a much more natural way to raise chicks and you'll find they are very quiet and content --as they can come and go from their heat source as they please. It's a lot like a mother hen.

I raised my second batch of chicks this way and will never use a heat lamp again.
The chicks themselves are the best judge of how much heat they need and when.
