When my hens get broody, I just throw a dozen or so eggs under them. Call me old fashioned, but this is an easier thing to do and it spares me much head and heart ache.

Are they fertile eggs to be hatched or just ordinary eggs to be eaten ?

I feel so mean locking them in broody jail. They look sad . I hope their broodiness breaks real soon

I know...but they'll be fine.
It's not 'mean', it's better for all involved in the long run. Tough Love.

That is not always an option.....and as happy go lucky as it sounds, it's not always so simple, especially for folks who have small spaces and haven't room for a couple dozen more birds, let alone managing 2 broody birds amongst other layers, and dealing with the inevitable 50% male chicks that will hatch.

Well, we eat fertile eggs. I have like 45-50 roosters, ganders, toms and drakes. It is rare to find an egg that is not fertile.
