Brown Shaver

it just occurred to me that people on this site may not have heard of this breed before as I am from New Zealand. this chicken was bred for nz and can lay up to 340 eggs compared to other breeds. but as far as I know they are the same as normal chickens but are brown and a little white. please read my other help post regarding brown shaver chicken. thanks:/

Isn't the Brown Shaver just one of the many commercial hybrids of the Shaver/Hendrix/ISA/Bovan/HiSex/Hendrix/DeKalb/Babcock genetics consortium? It is merely a commercial sex-link, is it not?

So, while a terrific pullet, I am sure, it isn't a "breed" as such. We have many of the commercial sexlinks from that corporation/conglomerate here.

Hi ya it may be considered not an official breed but many a child over here in New Zealand raise the baby brown shavers for aggracultural day at school (only the country schools) along with lambs or calves.
To most kiwis they are considered a lovely breed although can be quite aggressive to new comers to there flock of not raised by another hen. But can be worked around if introduced properly.

Most people have a shaver or five in their flock. But as we can't breed a true shaver pair we mix most into the flock I have bred a few that look just like a shaver but technically aren't a true shaver will post a pic of my lovely non shaver rooster elvis, when I get home from work love this site

I can definitely back this up. I was so surprised that no one on here had heard of Brown Shavers. I have a whole flock of about 10 straight shavers and about 17 shaver crosses. But they all lay so many eggs. It must be a New Zealand thing.
