This is my first post. I started with chickens I brought home from a kindergarten class, and am trying to figure out what breed they are. I pinned this one as a Buff Sussex, but now I see the Sagitta pullet pic under the Breeds section, and am having a tough time because that is exactly what this 5 month old looked like when she was younger. The Sagitta hens don't seem to look anything like her. She is in the foreground. She has some dark feathers around her neck. That's an Aracauna behind her, fyi. Not sure why I care so much, because I'll love her anyway. Maybe I'd just like to know her better?

Do you know where the eggs came from? I only know of the one hatchery selling the Sagittas (doesn't mean there aren't more, I just haven't heard of them

). Buff Sussex aren't especially common around here, and Sussex should have white legs. I can't see your bird's comb well enough to know it it matches with the Sagitta or not.

We're in Southern California. They came from Midway Feed. The comb is small and still light colored. The legs are definitely yellow.

I'm thinking Sagitta. As donrae pointed out, the legs on Sussex are white. Sagittas are a cross between Rhode Island Reds, New Hampshires. and Cornish, and have yellow legs. Likely Midway Feed ordered them from Dunlap Hatchery in Caldwell, Idaho (they breed Sagittas but not Buff Sussex). I lived for 7 years in California and feed stores there frequently ordered from Dunlap, which is an excellent hatchery (I've ordered from them several times myself). The folks at Dunlap are friendly and helpful, and amazingly, I never lost a single chick in shipping (I can't say that about the three larger hatcheries I've ordered chicks from).
