Hi all.

This is a lady from my very first flock. She’s 8 weeks old. They’ve been in their outdoor run/coop for a week or so. They stay in the run (w/ access to coop during the day) + get to free range when I’m home.

Yesterday I let them out of the run and she was fine as far as I know. They were free ranging for about 2 hours while I worked outside. My dogs stay close by and protect them from predators. I was outside with them and would’ve known if she got hurt by any other animals. I noticed she was holding up her right foot, then when I tried to catch her I noticed she was full on limping on it. I didn’t see any noticeable wound or scabbing, just that her toes oddly curled over when I picked her up.

Today the right ankle joint is swollen, and hot to the touch. The skin also looks green. I gave her a small dose of oil of oregano diluted for now but I can get to the store tomorrow to get whatever I need.

I’m just trying to figure out is this what the beginning stage of bumblefoot is like? All the research I do on it seems to be horrible cases way after the infection started so maybe I just caught it quick? Or should I be more worried about a serious injury like a break? All advice is welcome please & thank you!

First 2 pics are yesterday and last 3 ones are today to show the swelling, underneath and green color.

Hi,

She must've injured it. Green is what bruises look like on chickens.

I would soak her foot in warm Epsom salt water for about 5-10 minutes. It might make that feel better, plus, you can see better and maybe figure out if there's a cut or something on her foot.

I'd also keep her off of it by putting her in a box in the house or a small pen outside.

I would also give her Poultry Cell vitamins in her water, plus some B-Complex. If you have human B-complex at home, she'd get about 1/3 of one. That will help her heal if she's got a bone or muscle injury. If you go to buy some B-Complex, try find the liquid as that's so much easier. She'd get 1/3 of the eye dropper that comes with it.

Hi Debbie, thank you SO much for your response. I will do exactly what you said today! If they have an injury this young is it likely the bone would heal and recover?
