Hello all,

My three year old rooster Goth Boy has a black spot on the back of his leg and bumblefoot on his back toe. We're not sure if bumblefoot can happen anywhere else besides the bottom of the foot or if it can spread to up there. Is this a thing that can happen?
He doesn't put a lotta weight on this foot, but he does still walk on it.

The black stuff came off in chunks and there was blood underneath. Should we treat this as bumble or as something else?

We soaked him 10 minutes in warm epson salt, treated his bumblefoot on the toe, and took off the black stuff on his back leg. We sprayed it with vetericyn plus and put Neosporin on it before wrapping it up. If there's anything else y'all suggest we do, please let me know!!

Attached are pictures of what it looks like before we did any treatment (we did also take care of that little bumble spec on the middle of his foot), and what he looks like. I'm not sure what breed he is but he does usually have feathers on his feet/legs but they usually grew in on the sides. I'm not sure if feathers grow on the back of his legs.

Thank you kindly for taking the time to read this and for any advice given. Goth Boy has been with us since the beginning of our chicken raising and he is our best alpha roo <3

-Vinny

What did the wound look like when you pulled the “black stuff” off? A surface level wound or a bumblefoot-like cavity? Did something come out with the scab?
It looked like it was a surface level wound, there was just blood underneath and didn't seem like there was a kernal or anything there. The scab just came out in black bits and didn't seem to have anything else attached to them. Sorry if calling that leg wound bumblefoot caused any confusion! I appreciate your reply.

This we think was a start of a bumble scab, we removed that while we were taking care of the toe and leg
Yeah it does look like it but I didn’t want to assume in case it was just dirt. I try not to jump to conclusions with photos lol. Did you pull out a kernel with it?

Usually bumblefoot is deeper. I’d say this was probably just a regular scab. You can just treat it as a regular wound unless something changes.

Fair enough! That little spot didn't look like it had a kernal underneath it when we removed it. We plan on looking at his foot again tomorrow and I can give an update then.

Will do for his leg too! I'll give any updates if anything for his leg changes.

Do you possibly have an idea for his back toe? It's pretty swollen but that could just be from bumble, correct?
I appreciate your time and replies very much thank you <3

Bumble on his back toe is probably just deep. You got a kernel out, correct? How long have you been treating it?

Swelling can vary with individual cases of bumblefoot, but sometimes it can be pretty severe. Here is what my bird’s foot currently looks like as an example of extreme swelling.

Pad of her foot should be mostly flat but it is completely round like a golf ball. There are two lesions but the worst one is visible in this picture right after having the scab removed ⬇️

You can try to get your hands on an anti-inflammatory since sometimes prolonged swelling can cause damage (you can see her middle toe has been permanently twisted despite my efforts to prevent that) but since it’s mainly the back toe and not the whole foot I wouldn’t bother.

Yeah we were able to get some kernal out. It was bleeding a lot when we were getting into it. We had just started treatment yesterday.

That's one swollen foot! I'd say my boy's foot is really only swollen around his back toe area, the rest of it appears normal thankfully!
