I am fairly new to button quail. I bought a silver pair at a pet shop in 2016. The male escaped while his mate was sitting on eggs. We did not get him back. About 3 days after, his mate went missing along with the eggs. We did not find her. So i did my research and brought 6 fertile eggs. 4 hatched witch is pretty good. Considering; I use the in- incubator thermometer, I have no humidity measure, the power went out like 10 times and the eggs had a bumpy ride home. Sorry about the rambaling.

Hello again (from NZ). I'm glad you had some babies hatch. I'd love to see a photo.

Here are our babies who are almost 4 weeks old now. We've ended up with two male cinnamons, two female cinnamons (although one has a splayed leg but looks after herself just fine so she'll be kept as a pet in a small cage with a friend), and one silver. We did have a white chick but it didn't thrive and died, despite my efforts to save it.

I've brought them up as their mother decided to abandon their nest just as the eggs were pipping. I'm sure hoping she takes responsibility next time as they are so tiny and great little escape artists! The one with the bung leg managed to escape the other day and I discovered her at the top of my tall clothes airer! I was so worried one of our cats had got her (not that they've ever done more than give the birds a passing glance) but she was just fine. They are adorably sweet. I didn't handle these guys (I was too busy feeding the one that didn't thrive every 2 and a half hours) so they don't like to be touched, but they like being talked to and are no longer afraid of the camera. We have 2 children (who are the opposite of quiet) so they are bomb proof when it comes to noise. I was trying to get their attention by making funny noises one day to get them to look up for a photo. Needless to say they completely ignored me!

Silver chick - pretty sure it's a girl despite having a bit of a white bib as it has no reddish feathers round it's vent.

They are Chinese button quail and most often described as eye candy, and they certainly are gorgeous. The chicks Mum, Matilda, is pretty laid back and will wait until you are quite close to her in the aviary before she'll quietly move away. I think if you brought them up with enough handling you'd get the odd individual who was friendly. I would've handled the chicks more if I hadn't been trying to save the 6th chick who died when it was a week old. I wasn't expecting to be raising them but Matilda decided she didn't want to be a mother when the eggs started pipping. At least our babies are bomb proof when it comes to noise, growing up around two very loud children!

For friendliness you really can't beat Japanese quail. They've been domesticated a lot longer and it shows. Some of ours enjoy a pat. Hand raising them helps.

My baby button yellow(named by sister not me) is turning out to be rather white. At 3.6 weeks old he is very tame and will hop onto your hand. I haven't been able to take a picture yet. He hates the camera and will hide under his little black blanket when I try take a picture. I don't want to upset him so all I have are some very blurry photos.
