BYC Café

I won't tarp my run until next weekend. It's still too warm to close it off although it's freezing now and I have a fire in the stove.
We've had some blustery winds and cooler temps that make the chickens want to stay inside the coop even when it's sunny, so I put the windbreak panels on two days ago, and the shower curtains on the west side yesterday.

Sunny decided it was nice enough to come sit on my lap for a preening session. :)

I put some reclaimed metal roofing on most of the east side so that they have a chicken-high windbreak. We'll see if I need to do more. That side is in the lee of the garage.

When I do the north end, the curtains go up about 4-ish feet, and the peak is open.

Good morning Cafe. Coffee is ready.

Yesterday, I was sitting on the couch and caught movement out high the front window. Looked too big to be a crow or hawk. I dumped Piper rather unceremoniously on to the floor as I ran to the deck door, shoved it open and popped my head out just in time to see the heron land on the far side of the pond in the beach. I ran out screaming at it and it took off and lazily landed at the top of a tree right at the edge of my yard. I kept approaching the base of the tree and it just looked at me. Then, I kid you not, I pointed my hand at it 'gun fashion' and yelled out POW! The damn thing took off.

It was between the deck and pond first thing this morning and flew all the way off the property down towards a natural pond. That's right A-hole. Go hunt in your own pond.

put a range hood in the space
Vented to the outside?
One of the best parts about this house is a range hood that vents outside.

Another egg this morning, fresh off the presses, I saw the layer exit the nest as I came in to chore.
Warmed my hand and my heart.

I'm netting the pond tomorrow.

Looks like I'm down 2 large goldfish and possibly some of last years babies. But they can get into the crates that support the lilies so they may be in there.

I'll leave it netted until the lilies reach the surface in the spring.

And just to add one more issue I have to deal with, the over-the-range microwave decided to croak. I'm going to pull it, put a range hood in the space and get a small countertop model. You don't realize how often you use them until they die on you.
Look out for space using a countertop one. According to the installation instructions they need a lot of free space on either side and above for ventilation.
Possibly more than is available.
Don’t ask me how I know!

I'm getting a small one. And I'm putting it at 90° in the corner so it will have plenty of space all around including 9.5" over it.
