@Ladies-Eight

Come say hello to Karen who has been a member since February 2018 and comes to us from Florida.

1. Tell us a bit more about yourself. And is there a story behind your member name?
I have been married to my husband for fifty-five and a half years. We have one daughter who has two daughters age twenty-three and eighteen.

I have become my hubbies care giver since his last stroke. I am a retired nurse with a retired license to prevent me from wanting to go back to work.

When I bought my first chickens, eight ISA Browns, I came up with the name Ladies-Eight for the eight chickens and they were all hens.

Then I added twelve more ISA Browns and enjoyed going out to see my chickens.

2. Why and when did you start keeping poultry?
I bought my first chickens in 2018 and have never regretted it. I wanted to have my own eggs, I sold some, and gave a lot away.

I have always wanted to have some chickens but we moved around to much with my husbands job.

3. Which aspects of poultry keeping do you enjoy the most?
I enjoy going out to visit my chickens and taking them treats. I love to get the sardines, salmon, and/or tuna mixed up to take out to feed them. I usually mix the sardines with tuna, then I take it out and feed them with a fork.

It is really fun to watch them trying to position themselves closer to the bowl for more.

4. Which members of your flock, past and present, stand out for you and why?
Out of the first eight I had one hen who was very bossy. I named her Miss Boss and she was very bossy you can see her in my avatar.

When I bought my barred rocks and RIRs I tried to integrate them, but the older chickens would not have anything to do with them.

The ISA Browns would run them off the nests and fight with them even with me sitting in the coop.

I finally had to rehome them which was hard for me. They went to a very nice area down near Winterhaven, Florida, She only rehomes chickens and ducks I think.

One of my barred rocks is in large and in charge and I call her Mama. She knows her name and gives me a stern look when I call her.

5. What was the funniest poultry related thing that has happened to you in your years as an owner?
They love to peck at my nails as I have them painted red with a coat of glitter on top.

When I go out the back door on to the screen room they all come running. When I go out to see them they all gather at the gate to see what I have. I regulary take them some different types of grass. I have found out what they like and what they do not like.

6. Beside poultry, what other pets do you keep?
I have my sixth dachshund, she is a dapple and is one year old. Her name is Fraulein Porscha Prae.

She has been a light in this house and is a delight since we had to put the fifth one down.

Nice to know more about you @Ladies-Eight , Karen. That's a long time to be married. We are looking at 37 this year. Glad your husband is hanging in there. I'm also glad you have chickens. They can add so much brightness to a day. I've always loved dachshund, and we had a mini years ago. They are funny loving dogs.
