I am going to need to start cage breeding a few of my bantam faverolles because I want to know exactly who the parents of the eggs are. I need to know what cage size to buy for two large bantams. I do have a large dog crate and I am using it now but I would actually like to be able to hang it in the coop or attach it to the wall.

Help me!

Thanks,
Henry

you should get a medium sized cage large enough to fit two or three with a little bot of room to move around and get food so that their not crammed and hot. and sweaty !. \\\\Hope this helps !

Thanks yes it does I just need and idea of what size people use for there breedings. I may just stick with the large dog crate.

I know a gal that has been breeding their chickens for years (decades). Her breeding and/or brooder cages are each 4 foot Square cages/Pens outside of her hen houses. They each secure and have a roost and a raised nest. She breeds a Roo and 2 hens per Pen. I think she has about 6 pens and each has a shorter and narrower (I think about 2 Foot high) pen for her broody hens on top of it. The Brooder Pens are the same size but no roost or nest. I think the breeder pens are used as Roo housing as well, when they are not being bred.

Hope this helps. As long as you can have a roost and a nest inside the Large Dog house it should work well.

I use the "intermediate" ASPCA dog cage for bantams and "extra large" ASPCA for the standards. I don't always use them, but if I want a "one on one" match I do. They are also great to have around for quarentine or a broody. I have extras at all time. The "Medium" is great for travel.

(I put ASPCA specifically because their sizes seem to run a bit bigger - probrably for obvious reasons)

I have a pair of Faverolles in an ASPCA Large and its working very well. I just wanted to get him to mate this girl and fertalize her and then I will put another hen in with him. She is my best blue salmon hen and he is the best Cock I have so I wanted to know I was getting some good eggs out of them. They will probably be together for another few days until I get at least 4 eggs from her and set them. Then I will move in the best pullet who isn't being fertalized either.

If you have a predator secured area to put a pen inside, you can easily make a 4x4 or even a 2x8 tractor from pvc pipe and chicken or cage wire. Or you can get a roll or cage wire and make a round pen by forming it into a circle with a diameter of 3-4 feet. Clip on a shade cloth or plywood lid and you have a very inexpensive breeding pen. Note that it is NOT predator proof. With smaller openings (1/2"x1" wire) and stronger commections (j-clips) you can make a predator proof cage/pen.

Henry,

I have never even seen the "large" for sale... I'm sure it is big enough, though... the "extra large" has a trio in it right now and still plenty of room!
