Hello! I have a lonely mallard that we hatched for our backyard lake and nature preserve. Its buddy did not make it. We moved it to its outdoor predator safe coop and have let it free range almost everyday until recently it flew down to the lake (8 weeks old). I want to find it a friend to fly, forage and enjoy the lake with, but not having luck finding mallards. There are a few call ducks available in the area.

Would a call duck make a good friend for a mallard?

Thanks so much in advance for any insight.

Wild ducks will come in eventually.
A call duck will not survive on a lake, they're purely domestic
There are several geese that hang out on the land. We haven’t seen any mallards in months. Usually groups of them come around November.

I only considered a call duck to give the mallard company as well as a backyard pet for us.

Well, then you'd need more call ducks so when that mallard does what mallards do, you won't be stuck with one bird again.

I wouldn't recommend getting a call duck for your mallard. One reason being if your mallard is a male, he could hurt your call.

I would look into some other flying type of ducks. Maybe even put a ISO on FB, or some other alternative. :D

I have one line mallard also where are you located? We are in NJ

@Luv Ducks has Mallard females and Call Drakes lets see what she has to say.
My Mallard females and Call Duck drakes get along just fine. I have a very large coop for my ducks and a big variety and everyone gets along fine with everyone else. As long as it is another duck, mine don't seem to mind any new additions. I just added my Welsh Harliquin and male Mallard to the rest of mine and they have all been just fine. Good luck in finding it a friend.
