Hello,

I'm new to keeping call ducklings and have a few questions related to sexing them.

1. At what age do their voices begin to change from peeps to quacks and rasps?

2. At what age do call drakelets get their feather curls?

3. At what age is it safe to attempt vent sexing, since they are so small?

4. At what age will call drakes get their green heads?

I've tried looking these up before and have received very mixed answers. I was hoping to get some more information before the hens become too loud! :duc

Voice change will start at 3ish weeks, but maybe a bit later. That's usually just with the girls though since boys don't start a voice change till a bit later. As time goes on their voices will keep changing and you can start to discern male from female. You can accurately voice sex at around 6-8 weeks old. The females have more quacks and the males are more raspy.
I believe drakes don't get their drake curls till at least 10 weeks of age.
I'm not sure about vent sexing ducks.
Drakes will probably get their green heads at 10-12 weeks of age, when their adult plumage is coming in. Green heads on drakes depend on the breed though.

Thank you for your response! I didn't know call duck females would start quacking by 3 weeks! When I last raised my female White Layers, they started quacking around week 4-5 I think. And I read calls mature faster than other breeds, hence my questions
;)

My Call duckling started to make a different sound at around 6 weeks. The Male still peeped and also his coloring changed along with his beak color. He got the more greenish beak. They are Pastel in color. She stayed lighter and his chest is just now changing darker. I got them from Metzer farms around the 19th of March of this year. She now makes a very loud Calling sound and sounds different from all of my ducks. He is mostly quiet but when he does make a sound it is raspy. I would be afraid to try to vent sex them as you can hurt them and it is hard even for the experts to get it right 100% of the time. Time will tell for sure.
