Hi.
smile.png
I have hamsters. Have had hamsters most of my life in fact. Right now we have 3 we have had quite awhile and a new little guy, Anakin. He is a replacement for an elderly one we lost...belongs to my 7 y/o so being nice is important. All of ours are sweet little cuddle buns. Except little Anakin. He is MEAN!!! I am not letting my child even hold him right now because he bites EVERY TIME! I am working on getting him nicer.....lots of attention and snuggles...but is there anything else I can do to encourage him to keep his teeth to himself. I am getting tired of being bitten!!! LOL He is a Siberian and I have never had an issue with them being nasty. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Editing this......that should say he is NOT a Siberian, he is a standard hamster.......I really messed that up.

Yeah, all the Siberians I have had were EVIL except for one.

To my experience, most types of dwarf hamsters are mean and bite, I tried everything with my one, Marshmallow but he was just a grumpy little fellow all his life.

sounds like anakin Is joining the dark side maybe you should start calling him darth vader.
anyway just keep handling him but you should probably wear thick leather work gloves
it worked for our devils.

First off - I have to say - I like his name

My DD got one when it was a baby dwarf and it was super sweet and could be handled by anyone - I had another that we adopted around the same time, it was vicious and on the bigger side

You reach your hand in the cage and it would literally jump up - just to latch onto your hand.

I tried to use cheerios and other treats - but nothing worked. It got to where you got near her cage and she would run over and try to bite you thru the wire. I don't know if she had never been handled before or if someone was just mean to her.

We ended up having to rehome her.

I think once they turn nippy - it is hard to break them of it. Put if you find out how - let us know. Sorry no suggestions

wrap him in a dish rag when you hold him and wear gloves and just hold him alot. not sure how much that will help, i used to have pet rats and rabbits and thats what i did with the mean guys

Hey Christy as you no i have had 63 hamsters at once at one point LOL so i know a few things about them... i have had a few that were REALLY MEAN as well and the only way i got them tame was i had a glove one there teeth couldn't bite through and i would pick them up with that glove on every day a few times a day and after a few months the glove was off and they were nice to me

it's the only way i've seen that works

Haha me to! well...more like 30 but it feels like 60 either way. They just keep multyplying and etc etc etc. it beautiful the first time when momma has her cute little pink babies, but then its not so fun when you've got to clean cages everyday and cant keep count how many you have lol.

Could you dip your fingers in something that tastes awful but doesn't hurt them? He might associate fingers with icky taste and stop biting.

I don't know anything about rodents, but I know that's how they get dogs to stop licking themselves.
