can chickens eat flax seed?

Yes, chickens can. In fact, it is sometimes fed to them to increase the Omega 3 fatty acid amount in their eggs. However, don't give too much at a time, as I've read that it can give the eggs an odd flavor.

I tried it when I had some once, my picky buggers wouldn't eat it!

Ate everything else and left the flax laying there.

Mine too at first. I think I gave it to them too young. They are 11/13 weeks now and eat it just fine.
