Can my 4 wks old chicks eat grasshoppers?

Is grasshoppers going to hurt my month old california white pullets? My boys have realized if they drop a grasshopper in the cage they chase each other for it. It is really funny to watch but I just want to make sure that it won't hurt them before they do it again.

yes the chickies can eat grasshoppers.it wont hurt them 1 bit.

when chicks are raised by their momma's and they are allowed to free range they get to eat all kinds of creepy crawlers. aren't they fun to watch when they chase each other for a tasty treat.

My brooder is in the open bay of my shop so the light attracts plenty of bugs on the warm nights (I mostly brood in late winter). They learn from pretty much day one that bugs are great eats! At a month old they are plenty big enough to eat any kind of grasshopper unless it's one of the big Orange Lubbers that we get here that nothing will eat. Apparently they taste bad.

My 16 week olds free range all day and they pass up the bugs and worms. They seem to be happy eating grass. They pick up the bugs a few times then let them go. What's up with that? John

My month old chicks tackle each other over them. It's funny to watch...yesterday I went and bought some crickits and it was comical!

Yeah, its just fine but i would suggest taking off the back legs because some have really sharp things on there legs.

I have learned a lot since this thread last passed through. Now I have a roo that knocks down bugs, digs up worms and even cought a mole. He does his cackle like sound and the hens come a running. Fun to watch. Things have changed quite a bit since the roo was gifted to me. Just love my chickens. rj

When I turn out Pixie for her free-range time, she follows me around, watching for my feet to stir up grasshoppers, then she chases em down, and really seems to enjoy our "hunt".
