CANINE DISTEMPER- Any survivors?

I rescued a 4 month old puppy from a street person - looked very sick. Vet tested for distemper. Results were negative. 3 days after negative results, puppy started having tremors - not able to stand w/out bobbing, head bobbing, still with gooey eyes, nose. Back to vet - he's pretty sure it's distemper (negative results in late stages are common). New antibiotics, valium. I give lactated ringers sub-Q. ANY HOPE?

We just got a pup from a rescue. She had ulcers on feet and nose, then pustules in the ears. Vet has tried a few things, now they have narrowed it to "puppy strangles" (no relation to the horse kind, thank god!) its the bodies over reaction to a staff infection. So she is on all kind of meds. We are hoping this diagnosis is correct and that she will be ok. The alternative is an immune disorder.

Unfortunately distemper is usually fatal once it reaches the late stages. Even if they can clear the virus the neurological damage is sometimes irreversible and they just don't have a good quality of life. Fingers crossed though!

I have seen a few, very few, dogs survive distemper. Results were not good. Permanent neurological damage. Sorry.

If it has reached the neurological stage, there are few survivors. If they can overcome it before that stage, while it still is more of an upper respiratory symptoms, the survival rate is higher.

I would have the baby euthanized. It might be the kindest thing to do.

Can a chicken get distemper from a cat that has it that has been hanging around the coop? My chickens are sneezing just like the neighbours cat who has distemper sneezes. He is always around our coop

Feline distemper is a GI problem, not respiratory. The cat has some respiratory problem. Your birds do too, but not from the cat. Hope your puppy can get better, but the neurological issues are not good at all. Mary

Feline "distemper" is actually feline panleukopenia but since the symptoms are similar to dogs with distemper, it is sometimes referred to as distemper. the canine distemper is a different virus.

The chickens will not catch respiratory disease from a cat though.
