We have a sickly chicken who I am pretty sure has Capillaria worms (hair worms). I found some in her poo yesterday and the symptoms listed online for them matches hers exactly. We have wormed the flock with Wazine 17 but I read that it only treats roundworms?? What should I worm them with to kill the hair worms? I'm terrified the rest of the flock is going to get them. So far nothing I've found has been very helpful, hopefully someone with experience with these worms can help!!

Use Valbazen liquid cattle/goat/sheep dewormer. Give 1/2cc undiluted by mouth per standard-sized bird. Repeat dosage in 10 days. Do not eat eggs from these birds for 14 days after last dose. I found mine at a fleet supply store. Good luck and happy chickening!

If you can't find Valbezen (albendazole), get some fenbendazole 10% (Safeguard or Panacur, liquid or paste). I'm not positive, but I think that an effective dose would be 20mg/kg (0.2 ml per 2.2 pounds) by mouth for three consecutive days.

Thank you both so much!!! Our Tractor Supply definitely has the fenbendazole, but will also check for albendazole. I'm reading some very positive reviews about both!

FYI, according to Plumb's Veterinary Drug Handbook, albendazole can cause death in pigeons, doves and crias and aplastic anemia in other species, which is probably why it's not used in horses, but that's just a guess.

Oh my goodness! That's not good :(
Using drugs "off label" should always be done very carefully. There's another drug, Tylan (tylosin) it's an antibiotic sold at feedstores and it's labeled for cattle and swine, so one might think that you could use it on horses, right? Nope, can be fatal in horses...

I went ahead and figured up the dosage for the fenbendazole and gave them their first dose. Will be very careful! Thank you again for your help!

Fenbendazole is very safe, I've dosed birds at 50mg/kg for 5 days in a row and they've been fine. I've even had to use it on very young peachicks.

"Fenbendazole has been shown to be a very effective treatment for eliminating Capillaria (capillary worms), Heterakis (cecal worms), Ascaridia (roundworms), and Syngamus spp. (gapeworms). Toxicity from overdosing with fenbendazole is very remote. Research indicates that amounts up to 100 times the recommended dosages have been given under research conditions without adverse effects to the birds. Use of this product during molt, however, may cause deformity of the emerging feathers."
