Car trip with chickens?

Get some Cozy n' Fresh pellets from TSC and use it for the bedding for their traveling container. You won't even know you have chickens in the car, smell wise anyway. They can be found in the rabbit section, and they are safe for all small animals. This is what I use in my indoor brooders after they are about a week old. My 7wk. olds have already been camping with us twice when they were younger. I fixed one of my indoor brooders to run on a 12 volt light while traveling and then plug in the regular brooder lamp upon arrival. You should see the reaction when people are walking by the campsite hearing chirping coming from the travel trailer when the windows are open.

Water is the main thing. They can go a little while without food, however if they get dehydrated they can get in trouble health wise pretty quickly. Enjoy your trip and be safe!!!

I've done it and think you'll be fine. Be sure to protect them from drafts - but a towel or something over their cage if you have the windows down. Too hot or too cold = bad. If during the day definitely offer water. If at night you are off the hook, just make it dark for them.

I second the towel. It can help keep the smell down as well as calm the birds. We always did that. Whenever we reached our destination and took the towel off, they would wake up and look at us like they were saying, "What? Nap time's over already?"

So nice to know I'm not the only one like you! I had an Australorp ride shotgun once. It was only about a 30 minute ride... but she really seemed to enjoy it. I would say as long as you can give them water when you hit a rest stop and keep the windows cracked, they'll do wonderfully! Good Luck!
