I have been renovating a playhouse chicken coop and finally got to the last stages of cleaning and disinfecting it in anticipation of getting my chickens soon. As I ripped out the old vinyl covering the floor and stapled to the walls I discovered the floor is carpeted. I was a little dismayed because one of my main goals in this renovation has been to make the coop easy to clean and maintain. I was planning on recovering the floor and lower walls with vinyl or a tarp (and then doing the deep littler method) but now I am concerned that the carpet underneath will be a place to harbor who knows what. My question is, do I need to try to rip out the carpet? Or is there a quick fix someone can suggest (like covering the floor with a layer of dirt)? The thing I am dreading is I have already secured the coop to the run and in order to get to the floor to remove the carpet I will need to detach the coop and tip it on its side to get to the floor. If this is what I need to do, then I suppose the upside is I can make a new floor covered with vinyl to make the cleaning easy without having to replace it and staple it to the walls every year but I am really ready to be done with the construction. Any recommendations are welcomed.
