Cats vs chickens

My husbands cat ripped through chicken wire this morning to get into the pen with my 5 week old chicks...he was stalking them and they were panicking when we found him. I had
only used chicken wire because that pen is in a spot where we dont have to worry about predators...except that dang cat apparently. I ran to TSC and bought cage wire. If the cat gets through that he's finding a new home. He wont mess with the big chickens, he got pecked when they were about 12 weeks. But he seems to think chicks are fair game. After I put up the cage wire, the stupid cat left me a mouse on the back porch grrr
Toss the mouse in with the big girls. They'll think its yummy!

There is an old timers trick where you raise kittens with baby chicks and they grow up not recognizing them as prey. We do this with many of our cats and as adults they don't even bother going after the chicks. The cats that do not have this upbringing however (we can't catch all the litters all the time), have learned to give our girls a WIDE berth. From a cats perspective,, there is is nothing worse than a very large group of irate birds bearing down on it. Also,, out birds can be better mousers than the cats sometimes as well

Our chickens actually steal mice from the cats!
