did anyone every find out about zoning vs checkens in charlotte county florida. i have six out back, four are laying and i would like to let them out of thier cage which is 8ft by 8ft. my neighbors don't care so i don't think i will have any problems. the county has hired more code enforcement and i keep the checkensd hid behind a shed. i had heard that the county was passing a chicken ordenance to allow four checkens and that should have be approved last dec but they have it tied up with something else and is tied down. but maybe it has passed and i just don't know it. so if anyone is from charlotte county knows about this please let me know. thanks

Hi egg head,

I just wrote you a reply to your PM, but yes, the county said via phone just now that they plan to have it on the agenda for August 28. There will be 3 minutes per person to speak about why we want chickens. I am excited for this! Please show up if you have interest. We will be there with bells on. :)

Hello again, I will be off on the 28th! where will the metting be at? I'm thinking in murdock but just want to make sure. What time is the meeting. tks egghead

Today the charlotte county commisioners had thier meeting and chickens was not on the agenda. I guess it is not important to them so it is not important to me. I have six hens that i let run arround the yard and at this point i no longer care! if i get cited by zoning i will request a hearing on the matter and then maybe things will become important. I believe people who have chickensin charlotte county should organize themselves and push the issue. But everyone is keeping quite! At the meeting this morning i saw all those people and didn't know anyone. We need to organize a chicken group and move this issue through the system. Charlotte county just don't care about us. I plan on contact my representative and share some ideas with them. If anyone in charlotte would like to get involved let me know. frank

Hello again, I just emailed my cmmisioner for the zone i live in and asked her (trica duffy) to please get chcikens on there agenda and vote them in without a 4h stipulation. I explained that i had talked with several county people and there are a lot of opinions about chickens out there. I also told her that tractor supply where i purchased my six chickens said no problems in charlotte county. They would deny that now that the sale is complete. But anyway i future explained that my six girls are a large part of my family enjoyment. I use them to keep my gardens cleaned and in general the bug population in yard. I would ask that if you live in charlotte county you contact your representative via their web cite and tell them how you feel. If enough people send a note for thier support if would show that this is not just a fly by night hobby. I believe they need to see just how many people have chcikens already and with no problems. Thanks

The last post that I see in from September. Could anyone please tell me if they have found any further information on this subject? We have ten chickens and recently moved into Port Charlotte. We would like to take our chickens with us.... Let me rephrase that, we are taking our chickens, however, I don't need nor can afford a citation. Our Chickens are part of our family and are not too noisey. We have a six foot privacy fence and a huge chicken coop. I'm hoping that this will help with the sound. :) Anyhow, if anyone knows if they passed a law regarding chickens in Port Charlotte, please let me know. Thanks and have a great day!

Thanks for all the info so far. We are currently fighting to keep our 3 pullets (no eggs yet) here in charlotte county. We are zoned single family residence. An anon. complaint led to a visit from code enforcement. Actually a nice (and sypathetic) guy, but given 10 days to get rid of the birds. That led us down the same street as others to look at ordinences. Everthing so far said seems to be the facts. Next action on the advice of a guy named Buddy at the Zoning dept. is to talk with the code compliance officer again and see if an appearance before the (discretionary) code compliance board might lead to some logical discretion! I have the call in but no reply yet. I will let you all know. Thanks Will

Hi, I live in Charlotte county and was hoping on getting some chickens for my family
To raise as pets and collect the wonderful eggs . When I called zoning today they said chickens were not allowed in Charlotte county. I was wondering if there was any new news from william regarding his chickens? Did you have to get rid of them or were you able to fight it ?

Hello everyone,

We have been thinking chickens again, and I stopped by this thread to see if there's any news. I am heartened by the fact there are other people interested!

Egg Head - I called the county and spoke to Charlie Bush a few months ago, who said they scrapped the idea of putting chickens on the county commissioner's meeting last fall. It wasn't even brought up for discussion, as you witnessed. It's not been brought up since, as far as I know.

William Cornwall - I saw your article in January just now. What code did they cite you were violating? Just that a complaint means removal?

I am subscribing to this thread so that I can see if there's further activity. Meantime we could ask the county to allow chickens like they are doing in Lee County. They are banded together there and it sounds like they are making headway.
