Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

So.... it's been forever since I have been on here. Life took a huge dump on us but we are climbing up and can see the daylight! We didn't have chickens for a few years until yesterday. Rescued 6 hens from a hoarding situation. They look so awful. Tried to give them fresh fruit as treats, they haven't touched any of it. Would love to have room to take more to love on. I'll be making a post about them soon. I need help on id-ing some and ideas to better care for them. Fingers crossed they bounce back easily!
Congratulations on your new hens. Glad you could help them out with a new home.

Hi all! Been a while since I've posted, but we are going on year 8 of raising chickens.

We hatched a black Australorp roo last year, and hope to hatch some of our own eggs this spring. We like to hatch eggs with a broody hen, and none have gone broody yet this spring.

Looking forward to seeing what black Australorp + our variety of random breeds of hens will bring us 😊
Hatching can be so addicting, and than the excitement waiting for the new ones to arrive. Nothing better than new chicks.

So nice you could rescue some hens. Maybe they've never seen any fresh food :(. Poor babies, hope they'll soon recover with your good care. Maybe try some wetted feed, their own feed mixed with warm water made into an oatmeal type consistency. They might enjoy that and it will be easily digestible.

Oh, it's so nice to feel welcome from such friendly folk. (although I've been scratching here, in the background, looking for information for many years now!).

I'm in France and last week lost eight hens, they were just bitten in their necks (a martin?) and left to die. Horrible.

I hope to get a few new, ready to lay pullets, but my neighbour suspects that the rooster will aggressively over-attend to them. How can one avoid that problem?
Thanks and greetings to all,
Jane
I am so sorry!

Make sure you have the coop more fortified and predator proof.

If He starts hurting the hens with over breading, you can separate him by either sectioning off part of the coop or adding in a wire cage.

I've been gone a while! A few health things, non-contagious hospitalizations, and a little bit of time traveling with spouse and granddaughter. Still have flock with birds from 3+ years ago, 2 years ago, and adding 7 chicks this year.

Chicks are in the brooder and consist of 4 Silver-Laced Wyandottes, 4 Delawares, and 3 Red-Sexlinks. One of the Delaware chicks is already showing cockerel (bought as sexed pullets). The Wyandottes (also bought as sexed) are where the most uncertainty lies. I've never raised anything with a rose comb and the four chicks don't look identical, but there's not a lot of variation. I'll have to keep them a while longer before giving away the extras, I guess.

:frow Quick hello to say , well HELLO :D
Still no hens, still no farm :(
Have my Honeybees, a couple at home and a few more at someones farm.
I LURVE coming on here to look at the Chickie pics 🤗
Everyone needs to hug a hen today for those of us that don't have one to hug
Welcome back!

Are you watching the picture of the week thread?
