Checking-In On Peeps - Post Here To Say Hello!

Work has had me stretched for a while but I have some new birds and trying to pick out a couple of good Roos before I get rid of the other 5. I would love some opinions. I currently have blue laced red and splash Wyandottes but my wife wanted some sapphires so that addition was a no brainer.
What a problem to have. They are all gorgeous. When I have multiple rosters to choose from I generally choose by their behaviors. I prefer the less bold roosters. They tend to turn out better, and treat the hens better in my experiences. I generally start removing the troublemakers first. Than go from there. Good luck. I am partial to the Wyandotte myself.

We have such a vibrant community here at BYC... tons of active friendly members. Of course, life gets busy, so I was thinking it would be fun to start a thread welcoming some of our peeps we haven't heard from in a while.

If that's you, come say hello and let us know what you've been up to. :)

(if that's not you, feel free to invite peeps you haven't seen in a while and say hi to those that post here)
I haven’t been on here for a while bc a raccoon slipped into my coop that I thought was secure and killed the last on my flock. I haven’t gotten anymore bc I wanted to give myself a break from the devastation that caused and to fix the problems with my coop. I think my coop is now secure and I wanted to extend my run to give them a lot more room since I will not be letting them free range much. I have a closed in run, but was thinking about using a lot of the trees I have around the run to wrap netting around the trees and make them a bigger area to free range, but only get where I want them. I want to do this in a big space and wouldn’t be able to cover it with wire. Would be covered by tree leaves and then would have access to get to their secure run, but would have a bigger space to venture out. Good idea or no?

It all depends on what predators you are dealing with and how bold they are. I would let them out under supervision into the uncovered area. I've dealt with all kinds of predation over the years. It is hard to always get everything right. You just do the best you can, and tweak as necessary.

Thank you for caring about your bird members : ) We have moved since I joined, and took our two peafowl, three ducks and three ducklings with us. We did not have a good pen (had to build a secure one), and unfortunately lost a drake and three ducklings. The peas are still fine, however, I think that I was sold geriactric peas. It has been 4 years, and no sign of mating; lots of dancing, but no pouncing : ) I have added a pair of guineas, and recently acquired another which was sold to me as a female. "She" calls chi chi chi? I am now looking for another peahen. Otherwise, living in the "wild" has many good points and some drawbacks when it comes to losing birds : (

Hello Nifty and everyone!

I haven't been on BYC in a few years and I noticed I got an award for 6 years....oh wow. Time has passed so fast. We moved 3 times since 2019 so I was off BYC. We sold our house and chickens, moved to a condo on the water with no chickens, then bought a new house with 1.50 acres in North Florida 14 months ago. I had my same coop builder make a beautiful large coop for my chickens. Happy to chickens again. Just got a second smaller coop delivered. Large coop pics included 🐔
