Hi Everyone,
Just be really busy this year. Tried my hand at getting baby chicks and raising them instead of buying 4-5 monthly birds.
The babies are a bit of work but I am finding worth the effort. Surprised my grand-kids (7 of them) when they were over for Easter Saturday with my new babies and they loved them. Everyone wanted to hold them. The kids were good with them and everyone survived, including grandma's nerves.
The first batch did so good, I got another batch in August, black Marans and I love them. I think they may just now be starting to lay.
On the April batch I did end up with 2 roos of which one won out. I just call him Big Boy. The other that past I called Little brother. The girls don't get names, except one of the Black Maran's when I figure out which she is is going to be Rogue One, First when I was transferring them to the outside, she got out of the box and lived in the garage for 3 days til I finally found her. Then last week all 4 got out of the pen and 3 were huddled together and got them back in the pen, but Rogue was missing. The next morning when I let the dog out, Rogue was on the wrong side of the fence so Panda, our dog, chased her and Rogue hid in the Trailer barn for a while. Found her finally and got her back to the coop. She happily joined her sisters.
Big Boy is a bossy one but a good Roo so far, he watches his ladies. Come spring 2025 I should have 10 layers or at least 9 actively laying.
So yes its been a busy year.
Happy New Year all!
