Hello,

So about a month ago i got baby chicks, one of them who we called Lulu was always the most lethargic one out of them since the day we got her. I noticed on day 2 that she slept a lot and didn't seem very energetic and she remained this way the majority of her life. A week later she started gaping her beak every now and than, however we managed to solve the issue and she stopped. from than on she seemed more energetic and blended in with the others. However, one morning at the age of almost a month we noticed that she was standing still, not eating much or following the rest of the chicks when they went elsewhere . She was limping as if she didn't want to put pressure on her left leg, we took a look and realised the area above her left leg had a dark mark like a bruise. she remained standing still, not moving much or eating much throughout the day. The next day things were worse, the mark that looked like a bruise had gotten bigger and the her skin started turning black from between her legs, this time she barely ate at all. We gave her a comfy supporting bedding and she was sleeping all day it seemed and breathing hard. Couple hours later, dark orangish discharge was coming out of her nose and some blood. At this point she wouldn't open her eyes at all. Once we held her to check up on her she suddenly started flapping her wings, her body was flipped from side to side because of this, more orange discharge was coming out and by the end of it she passed away and a brown slime came out of her mouth afterwards. After doing an autopsy we saw that her meat has turned black and there was a black lump found near her left leg and on her bone. I have tried to research online to know what was wrong with her but couldn't find anything so was wondering if anyone on here has an idea? It would be very appreciated.

Thank you.

Very sorry you lost her. Maybe try the emergencies, and cures forum?

I agree that she had a bite also and by having a bite of some kind whether venomous or not she became septic and gangrenous. The infection took over its little body and it really just became one big abscess. The meat and organs rotted and filled with puss or vice versa and it keeper over. Surprised it lived that long. Probably a testament to the good care you were giving it is why it lived as long as it did. You never know. Even animal bites can become infected from one little puncture.
