Slow/sour crop suspected in 3yo EE Hen. Please help!

Take any pictures of her vent and her droppings if you can. Be sure to get her drinking. If her crop feels like it has a blockage, you can massage it several times a day. Her crop could be slowed down if she has a stuck egg or is having reproductive problems. Reproductive problems include salpingitis and egg yolk peritonitis, and sometimes may be complicated with water belly. Cancer is also common. Calcium with vitamin d can help lay an egg if an egg is stuck.

She may have sour crop or her crop is not working. What do your feed including any treats? Does she have access to grit to help her gizzard grind food and grasses? Do you have any Poultry NutriDrench or electrolytes and vitamins? Give her some or add a tsp of sugar and a tiny pinch of salt to a cup of water and offer that up to her beak. I would also give her a human calcium tablet or Tums in case she is egg bound.Yes, you can try giving a tsp of coconut oil, slightly chilled, and cut into small pieces to peck.
They have a feeder of a mix of 16% Dumor Layer Feed and 20% Dumor starter (as I was advised on this site to use the starter in lieu of all flock due to it being harder to get). I don't know how far back you want me to go with treats, as it varies by the temp. But their common treats are their own eggs, mealworms, and scratch. Bread or warm rice is offered when the temps drop below freezing. Chilled fruits or veggies when it gets above 85. They have a constant supply of grit and shell during the day. I have none of those things available to me, and no way to get them in the immediate future. I tried the water, she hated it, so I sloshed it kind of and she willingly drank a few sips. She had zero clue what to do with the coconut oil, but she got a smidgen. I should've waited and just chilled it, as suggested. Will do that in a minute. Can I put the Tums in something? She has absolutely no wattles and there's no way that I can force her beak open. I think I answered them all? Thank you! 🙏🏻 ❤️

Ok. I'll take the photos in the morning. All of my birds, including her, have gone to bed for the night and I'd like for her to rest if she can. She shows no symptoms of water belly from what I've read; her lower portion is quite hard to the touch and not bulging or anything. And I've been advised before on here that if I was up to it I could do the pinky check? I have yet to do it to a hen, but if it would confirm or dispute the theory that an egg is stuck, then I'm willing to try. 🫣👀🙏🏻

I suspected she was egg bound at first, as she showed very similar symptoms to another hen who has already twice given me egg problems. So I moved her inside and gave her a bath (she hated it). She was determined to leave the tub, hit me and the tub and vomited yellow liquid.

She was so heavily caked that I couldn't even see her cloaka(?)... Her booty. I couldn't see her booty. So I used warm water and a rough cloth and gently worked it all off, twice lifting her tail enough to lower her head (had to see what I was doing) and she vomited yellow liquid both times.

She hasn't laid an egg since last October/November. She hasn't pooped yet at all, which is why I'm thinking I may have a double whammy problem and she may also be struggling to lay an egg

Very sleepy and seemed overheated so I provided her with a mini battery operated fan. If she's pooping, then it's clear liquid or faintly yellow/green to match the towel she's on.
Hopefully she's able to poop now.

I would suspect that she may be struggling to pass an egg or material like lash (Salpingitis) and the crop problem is a symptom, usually it is ime.

Yes, you can give her coconut oil if you wish, it won't hurt anything. I'd offer it in small hardened chunks, see if she will eat it on her own. Mine love the taste of it, even when not well.

I would work on hydration and get extra Calcium into her asap. She was pasted over, did you notice if she had any maggots around or under the vent, any wounds?

Sometimes a hen doesn't tolerate being placed in tub or given a bath, but they seem to do o.k. with rinsing the bum with warm water and a cloth. If getting into the water really stresses her, then do the best you can with just rinsing/flushing with warm water.

As for feeling for an egg. I wouldn't. I've done it but have changed my mind on doing it for the most part, it's usually not helpful and it stresses the hen.

She did her first poop this morning! Like, 15 minutes ago! I looked in, fully expecting her to no longer be with me, and she struggled to stand (or so it appeared) and then all I heard was pppffffllllttttt. Poop! If a chicken could smile, then I think she would have been, she looked so relieved. But her bum has no wounds, no maggots, no lice, no mites, and no signs of them ever having been a problem, either. I regularly check them, but the poopy butt must have really became a problem while I was dealing with another hen that was in distress, and this goes to show what a few days not paying attention does. 😔 Her poop looks completely normal (Pics will come a little later. Now that her booty burst like that, she kind of needs another bath. Her bum isn't plastered or anything, but it's got ick and I want it all gone so that I can do an exam at the same time as I get pics). She did vomit at least twice in the night, small amounts. Her crop is still swollen. I didn't expect her to be all better, so no surprises there. But when I first checked on her she was more alert than she has been, so that's improvement. After pooping, all she wants is to sleep now, so I'm letting her. She has lots of fresh water for now.

Oh yeah, she HATED the tub. So I had needed to do everything on the floor because she kept trying to fly (safest on the floor). Bucket of hot hot water, and a clean, rough rag. She seemed to like that. I don't know if I'm missing anything. I had a mental list of what I was going to report. 🤔

I'm trying to get her to take the Tums, but I am horrible at getting things to take medicine! I just don't understand how to make her take it without mixing it into food, but as she doesn't want food, then I'm at a loss. 😓

Good to hear that she is pooping now. I would try to give the calcium as soon as possible which can help her pass an egg or lash material. Here is a good video of a vet demonstating how to give a tablet twice. He also demonstrates tube or crop feeding if you want to see how easy that is.

Thank you! I got her to eat some of it, but now we're at a new stage of problem: She keeps jerking her neck out and up and slightly to the right. Not always, but occasionally. But her crop feels like it's drastically dropped in size! It feels completely empty! This bird is going to give me an aneurysm. I don't know which problem is the one that I should focus on as every time I turn around she's giving me a new one. But she was all happy when I offered her very wet mash and grit, and she tried to wander out of the crate. When I said no she went back to being all sad and miserable. But if I put her outside, care is going to be near impossible with the rooster and too much room for her to get away. 😥

Oh! I also found that one negative about keeping a chicken in a dark room. Of course they're going to be sleepy! It's dark! They don't move much in the dark! 🤦🏻‍♀️ She really was alert when I lit up her cage and gave her a minute. 👀😓

Why is she in the dark, just for nighttime? I would let her out some with her flock so they don’t forget her and attack her when she comes back full time. I usually leave my sick hens in the coop with the others. You can use a dog crate to keep her separate, or let her out with them for an hour before they go to roost in evening. You also can give her calcium, check her crop, and treat her on the roost just before daylight or at night. You can also feed her at that time. I don’t like to have them out of the flock for more than 3 days, or they may attack them.
