I also vote for running water. My three little feather legged Creole Pekins tend to get poo stuck to their feet or feet feathers and running water cleans them up in no time.

Try getting some probiotics into the chicks as well. If they're raised with Momma, they'll get probiotics by pecking at the dirt and poop. (Gross, I know.) In brooders they don't have that chance. I use Probios in their feed, but you could use plain yogurt. If your soil is healthy and you don't use chemicals on your lawn, you can offer them a chunk of grass with roots and dirt included. Usually it will clear up by the time they are 10 days.

I don't know if you all have read this right. The original poster said the chick has been laying down repeatedly and has a piece of poop UNDER her. I don't know if they are meaning pasty butt or if it is poop stuck to feathers under the belly. I would try a little dawn dish washing liquid in very warm water and paper towels and just keep wetting it until it softens up enough to get off then dry the best you can with paper towel and put it back under heat light.

Well, did your die? does having "poop" on them couse death? our just died an our ago... we HAD 6. Now, we have 5. my 9 year old sister is very upset. i was just wondering if because of this "poop" does it get stomach problems? thank you for your time

Pulling is a bad idea. Best to trim. soak off with warn water or cooking oil. Oil (olive, A&D, prep H will all work. I would avoid petroleum based products ) really any oil will help keep poop from sticking but it's best to treat the cause of pasty butt by mixing some (live/active cultured) buttermilk with the the feed (~1/2 teaspoon buttermilk to 1 teaspoon feed per chick). and feed it once a day for three or four days then once a week. You can used active cultured Yogurt but many chicks don't like the strong flavor.

I make up a big batch (1 cup buttermilk+ 2 cups feed) and let it sit out in a pie pan on top of the brooder where the light dried it out then re-crumble it and "serve" it room temperature.
