Hello! I'm having an issue with one of my two chicks. Seems to be vision, perception, or balance.. possibly neurological..?
I would've bought more than two for this batch, but we are within city limits and we could only get 2 more. I already have 8 chickens.. 5 Adults, 3 Pullets, and the 2 chicks. The chicks make absolutely no contact with my flock, and I don't plan to bring them outside for playtime until I'm sure that the one I'm making this post about is ok.
I have two 12 day old chicks (female).. one Silver-Dorking, and one Speckled Sussex. They both eat the same medicated grower feed, (crumble,) and were on some nutri-drench a few days ago, and are now back to fresh water. They both (allegedly) hatched the same day. The one who is having issues is the Speckled Sussex, who has barely grown at all. Her sister, however, is over twice her size. Both get the same food, heat, and water.. (obviously lol.) Both are lively, play frequently, eat plenty, drink plenty, poop fine, and overall see healthy other than a few specific things wrong with the Speckled Sussex.. (Mocha.) Her feathers are coming in fine, however her growth seems to be somewhat stunted.. and she seems to not react much to things close to her. However, things far away seem to frighten her. She moves her head a lot more than her sister, and it worries me because I helped take care of a blind hen a few years back and she moved her head the same way. She also stands a bit taller than a normal chick would.. definitely not water-belly tall, but taller than the usual stance. Mocha definitely can see, and when I actually put my hand in their brooder she rushed to me. She is not being picked on and is not having any issues getting attention, food or water. They are mostly quiet throughout the day, other than a few louder peeps here and there while they play.
She seems to be fine other than those issues. My family is convinced she has more severe eyesight issues or is even blind/going blind, but I am not sure what to think. I am going to try and add some photos now.. but I am on my phone and might have to go to the computer to do so, since it didn't let me do so on mobile last time I posted. Does anyone have any tips? It's not exactly an emergency.. but I'd appreciate a response so I know what to do, and if I should give her anything or not.
