Chicken and Fires. What to do?

We are definitely taking them with us if we have to leave. We have a small spare bathroom that we could probably bring them into. They were outside yesterday in that air. Is there anything we can do that would reverse some respiratory damage that might have already been done? Would two large dog crates be enough space for 3 chickens?

Late to the reply but I think one day was likely not catastrophic for them. 2 crates is more than enough for 3 chickies. I'm so sorry you're going through this.

Yes definitely enough space especially given the alternative. I would bring them in if they were mine. I pray the fires can be stopped soon.

Thank you all so much for the support and kind words! We brought them inside and put cardboard on the floor of the room they are in. There’s so much uncertainty right now but it’s so nice to have people supporting you. The hens seem to like their little place and have already started pooping
it’s gonna be a big mess to clean up in that room but it’ll be worth it

The winds are picking up again tonight but with how much the fire has been contained I doubt that it’ll be blown back towards us. The girls got more outside time today and are back in the comfy warm bathroom. I think they’re gonna be spoiled by the time they go back outside

But he is severely traumatized and has been crying. I’m trying to calm him down by hugging and cuddling him in a towel, maybe tomorrow I will soak him in warm epsom bath and treat his wounds.

Please keep them in the garage for the time being… in boxes, and just cover them with 1/4” mesh as the cardboard box’ “lid”. Plenty of water and multivitamin.

Very scary, we live in N. central WA and have had bad fire situations also. We had to leave, at one point. I took 7 chickens with me. The rest were set up in an area that had nothing that could burn. (Thanks to our dry area.) Things ended okay. There was not a problem. (One hen was broody and sitting on eggs through it all.) This happened in the summer. Not a fan of summer because of this.

I just watched the video. So scary and I’m so sorry this happened! I’m glad your chickens were saved! Any news on your ducks?

Hello I live near the fire too, and it looks like things are pretty safe now. I’m worried about letting them back outside, what about you? I cleaned out the coop and watered the lawn. I’m still afraid that they will ingest ashes that are leftover.

We just let them back outside yesterday. It seems like the fire is contained and the air quality has been good for a couple of days.

Oh my gosh! I’m so sorry that you had to go through that. I hope that all your birds are safe and thank you for saving the rooster. A lot of people overlook them but you are a really kind soul.

As hard as this fire has been on your flock, we know it's even harder on you and your family. Many people here are thinking about you and sending prayers. Take strength where you can ... and remember that The Phoenix, rising from the ashes of destruction, is a bird!
