Chicken attacked by raccoon, shock (warning graphic pictures)

Pics
Tonight, I brought her out to the two chickens again cleaning the dog cage. Was a lot better. She wasn't attacking the two chickens as bad. They did give respect and kept away from her (Spots).
I have to explain she was ruthless with the other chickens, scared them as they kept running from her as well going into the dog temp coop and chasing them relentlessly.
Sounds like normal pecking order stuff to me. She was just making sure there was NO Question as to who was boss! (Top Spot :))

And being a lot better the next day sounds normal too. Since the other girls gave some respect and kept their distance, she knew she was holding rank.
If you do it again tomorrow, it will probably be even better.

I do agree with you, I'd wait until she's healed before putting her back full time.

I know it can be a bit unsettling to see them bicker and squabble. The chasing about is quite normal. Giving a few hard pecks and even a tussle can be normal. I just monitor things like that. If no one is getting hurt then I let them work it out.

Today I worked on the coop again, my hands are bleeding working with the pocky wires. I really feel the coop is safe now. looked everywhere and secured anything of question. I set a trap again tonight, keeping my dogs in overnight in case I catch the coon. I plan on putting the other two chickens back in their coop tomorrow. They are really ready. Will Keep Spots in the recovery meanwhile.

I just wanted to say thanks for keeping us updated on Spots' progress. I feel weirdly invested in this chicken I have never met. I'm so glad she's getting back to her feisty self!

Tonight, I let her join the other two again she still held her own with the two. I gave treats in the dog pen, and she was first in there and wouldn't let the other two in. She is holding her own. When I put her back in the room I am using for her healing place, I also gave her additional treats plus also gave the other two treats in the dog cage since she pretty much ate them. They are giving her respect. I am so amazed how strong she is doing during such a short time of healing from the coon attack. Her head is looking so good each day of amazing improvement as well.

Glad she is doing batter. I had a severely skinned head injury on a quail that took months to heal.. his head is well now, but has scarred enough to be visible through the feathers. Also had a silkie roo with a similarly bad injury to the head. His head swelled to the size of a gold ball. He successfully recovered. With both, I used a treatment plan of separation, sugar water (promotes healthy cells (through the whole treatment), peroxide (first treatment round), and vetrycin (used after the initial peroxide treatment)

Glad to hear your positive outcome, thankyou for sharing. I did first treat the injuries with hydro-proxide. Now just putting Neosporin non aspirin. I just put a few drops each day and it spreads from the heat of her head. The dried blood is almost gone and just pinking red now. She does have a few feathers on top of her head. I am mixing her antibiotics with chicken electrolytes and she seems to prefer drinking this versus regular water that is available. I think she likes the sugar aspects that the electrolytes giving it.

Yea, they usually do like that kinda stuff.

Kind of with tears, very scared, put my other two chickens back in the coop. I went thru it like crazy and cannot find any area where the coon can get in. I feel good but always feel am I missing anything. I do have the trap set outside as well. Just scares me so much having a loss of two and one scalped. Wish me luck they will be okay.

:hugs Hoping all goes very well!

I am happy to see they survived during the night. Fortunately, the trap didn't catch anything. I am thinking the coon moved on due to chickens not in the coop for several weeks. I could tell the chickens are nervous still. I am going to grab my game cam video later today to check. for sure. Spots is doing well and gave treats again and she loved them. She is doing so well. So very blessed. I was going to bring Spots out with me today to the coop, so she has interaction with the other two chickens, while I feed and change their water out, so she keeps active with them.
