Hello and thanks for tuning in. I just ordered my first batch of meat birds. 26 CX will be on the way in june when they hatch. Trying to learn about processing in the meantime.
I dont like paying someone else for something I can do. Was looking into cones to dispatch and realized I have metal that will work perfectly if I get dimensions I can make my own. Then wondered what else would work to secure and calm the bird?
Could you cut the corner out of a bag?
Glue some plywood together in same shape?
Bungie cord it to a wall?
I've seen people (videos) use cones and even just slipknot the feet and physically hold it.
I want to be humane first and foremost, then efficient next. Holding the bird doesn't sound efficient.
The plan would be to process 5 at 8 weeks, 5 at 9 weeks, and 10 at 10 weeks.

I used a bleach jug until the dogs used it as a chew toy. A 1 gallon jug should be fine.

Select your jug with a cone shaped top. The flat ones won't guide the head out of the hole.

I have a traffic cone. The first time I used it I didn't have the end cut big enough. I had to stick the rooster in, pull it out, trim some off the cone, stick the poor bird back in, pull the bird back out, cut some more.... It took about 5 or 6 tries. I felt really dumb and really abusive, kind of like I was mentally torturing him with near-death experiences. Finally got it right and it worked well.

First time I tried to use the metal cone the CX hen didn't fit. She had got jumped by a br cockerel and blew out a hip. Sooo I had to do her on the ground because she was unable to walk. Looked up homemade and made the kitty litter one right away.

I have some sheet aluminum I might try to make one. Also have traffic cones but mine are a bit greasy. I like the bleach bottle idea. Simple.
I know size will vary but is 2.5" radius good start? I have a month before my birds even ship so hopefully will be pro before I touch my first bird. :old:idunno
