Chicken Connections

Some chickens are cuddlebugs and some .... are not and never will be. Chickens are prey animals. And in their minds, anything that picks them up only has one reason for doing so ... it wants to eat them! If you can't pick up your chickens without chasing them, forget about it! You will only cause them stress and make them fear you more. If I MUST handle my birds for health reasons, I do so at night when they are on the roost. They don't see well in the dark. I like to use a head lamp to keep my hands free, and if it has a red light option, so much the better. Don't feel bad if your chickens don't like to be held! It's not really their nature.

Love this response. It clears up a lot! Some follow me around, others i can't even touch. I have a non walk in coop so it's hard to catch them off guard unfortunately 😕

We got EEs and Brown Leghorns at the same time one year, day-olds. They were like night and day right from the start. The EE learned to come when I called for treats (mealworms). The BL were always TERRIFIED of us and acted like ... well, like wild birds! Even 2 or 3 years later you'd think they had never seen a human before. Crazy.

It is crazy! It's like yo, I feed you....you know me! It's me! Nope. And the others I'm doing a balancing act just to get to the car; tripping over them underfoot! Just like people I guess.
