Chicken coop company

Got the Rhode Island Homestead, I haven’t opened it yet. Half tempted to call and return it
Hang on. First, how many chickens are you hoping to start with? You might have some options depending on number of chickens and willingness to make a few alterations. You have the coop, now lets see what you can do with it, starting with how many chickens you want now.

Oh. I see in your other thread you have about 16 baby chicks. Wow. I am assuming these are why you need a coop fast. I also see in another of your threads you have 3 adult hens and 1 adult Rooster. So you need room for 20 birds with a way to separate adults from babies while keeping them able to see each other until babies are big enough to integrate. You will need at the very minimum a coop with "floor only" space of 80sqft, 100sqft would be better. Get thee to home depot, buy an 8x12 shed kit for probably close to the price you paid for the Rhode Island coop, like this one. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Handy-H...t-x-12-ft-Wood-Storage-Shed-18631-8/202205311
For a bit more $ they usually will deliver and assemble it if you don't think you can handle the assembly. If it has windows up high like this one ask them not to install the glass so you can attach hardware cloth for ventilation. I'd also cut some of the triangle under the roof out to do the same thing for ventilation. Then just cut and build a pop door. Add nests, roosts, poop boards, litter. Coops ready. Add a run 200sqft and you're set. Remember to make it predator proof.

The RIR coop was 1,100 on sale that shed that @Cryss linked is 1000 plus tax, if you take the extra 100 you can put in a pretty decent run. It would take another 50-100$ to make that shed a chicken coop, but it will all be worth
It!

Gotcha I’m doing the return process now. I’ve actually got my friend coming over to asses the situation he’s a carpenter. I won’t lie I fish for a living so Hydrolics an engines an welding no problem but carpentry is no a strong point. So your thinking 8x12 on the coop an what double that for a run? I get stuff from Home Depot but I gotta ship it over by boat. We live on an Island.

An island!! Oh the peace! Oh the serenity! Oh the green with envy color I just turned!:love:gig
Ok just keep in mind:
4 square feet per bird for the coop or, preferably, more. 4 sqft by 20 birds is 80 sqft. An 8X12 coop is 94sqft so it would be a good size.
10 square feet per bird for the run or, preferably, more. 10sqft by 20 birds is 200sqft. An 8X25 run is 200sqft so there ya go. Don't use chicken wire, it is easily ripped by predators. Use 1/2 inch hardware cloth.
Don't forget as you approach finishing all of this to ask around here for the best ventilation installation, predator protection methods, and the best locations for nests, roosts and said ventilation.
I really really REALLY hope you take pictures of the building progress. It could help the next person get good ideas. Besides, we love pictures of absolutely everything chicken!:wee:pop

I have a prefab coop, I don't remember where from, but I knew I needed some support for it... so we have an NJchickenman who does what he calls a China rehab coop, which basically reinforces it.. add wood, wire mesh, added doors, and steps and perch bars... I think a prefab coop could work but it might need help. He also added new roof shingles since NJ winters can be pretty brutal.

I would love to see how your man rehabbed you're coop. Do you have pics? To be real pushy, any before pics too? I've done some rehabbing of my prefab using scrap wood. Here's my thread showing the process. https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/altering-my-terrible-ts-coop.1267790/#post-20364469
Do you have a thread with pics?
