Chicken Coughing Blood?!

Hi everyone!

I’m very new to all of this. My father in law had chickens for a year or two so he is the only other source of info I have... he lives on our property and is always available.

We just got a flock of 26 birds- 22 hens, 1 rooster, and 3 ducks (1 drake). We bought them from friends of ours that are moving across the country, and they got them from a friend about a year ago. They told us they are all approximately 3-4 years old.

I have no idea what the conditions were like before we received them as I wasn’t there to bring them home, so I can’t say they had the best care or the worst.

My hubby, father in law, and I were sitting out by the chicken run/coop just watching the birds and I noticed one hen was just curled up in one of the nesting boxes. I thought it was strange but again, I’m new to this, and thought maybe she was just trying to work on laying an egg. A while later the thunder cracks and she starts squawking for 3-4 minutes and gets the rooster worked up. After her squawking episode she started coughing and it sounded very raspy. We were all concerned and we’re just watching to see if she was just having a moment or if it was serious. Then she suddenly coughed up blood, and what I though was a large blood clot (looked like a string). I was trying to get into the caged run area when another hen ate the string part. I have no idea if it was a worm, tissue, or something else.

She was very clearly deteriorating fast and stopped breathing quickly after. It was so sudden and I have no idea what happened. Is this something that can be contagious? We are currently 1 week into raising 11 baby chicks to have some younger birds in the mix. They are 100% separated and inside our home for now.

I really don’t want to lose this entire flock but there aren’t really any chicken vets in my area, and I really don’t want to lose the baby chicks if the coop area is contaminated. Do you guys have any ideas as to what this could be? What I can do?

Please be nice, I have no idea what to do!

I'm sorry to hear about the hen.

Without necropsy, it would be hard to know what happened or if she had something going on to be very concerned about or not. If you still have the body, refrigerate it and send it to your state lab for testing. You can find your state lab in the link below.

Now. To speculate. Did you happen to have a chance to examine her body to see if there was any blood inside her beak, a cracked beak, any blood on her comb? When she started squawking in the nest, the rooster got worked up...was he just vocal or did he flog or peck her? More questions than answers I'm sure. I have to wonder if it was all coincidental, she was trying to lay an egg, she's in new surroundings (stressful), thunder...possible she ruptured something. The sudden onset of symptoms makes me thing it was something that JUST happened instead of illness, but it's speculation on my part.

There is a respiratory illness called ILT (Infectious Laryngotracheitis) where they cough so much they cough up blood, but you would have noticed symptoms beforehand. Coughing, gasping, mucous, extending the neck to breath, not eating/drinking, lethargy, etc.

IF you do see any other birds showing symptoms of illness, then it would be wise to get some testing through your state lab.

Thank you so much for your reply! The rooster was only vocal and across the enclosure. He’s pretty docile so it was strange to see him worked up.

I’d like to think it was sudden and something stress related because from start to death it was probably about 10 minutes. The cough started right then too. Her beak was indeed filled with blood and she kept sputtering blood right before and after the cough of the clot/tissue/object... I’ve been watching the hen that ate the object she coughed up, and she is fine. Nothing concerning at least since I don’t know their personalities yet...

My father in law took care of her body and we no longer have it. I would think the other hens would have started showing symptoms if it was contagious, but it could take more time. I’m hoping that this was just a strange event but it would be nice to have an answer. Now I know for next time that a necropsy is an option.

My first thought was ILT or gapeworms. However, other birds would be showing symptoms for either as well.
@Wyorp Rock is correct, a necropsy would be best to determine what happened to your hen. Hopefully this is just an isolated incident and not something that'll spread through your flock.
Thank you! So far everyone seems to be just fine. Everyone is looking great, even the one that ate whatever was coughed up. Hopefully just a strange occurrence.
