Chicken making noise like purring

HI all, one of the girls is sounding like she is purring this mornig and I know that this not a normal sound for her. Eating scratch but it sounds very odd. I tried massaging her crop and can't feel anything but it's very odd. Any suggestions very welcome, it's distressing to hear her breathe like that. I suspect she got into bird seed and ate a sunflower seed-the little birds strew their seed everywhere.

Hello there and welcome to BYC!

Chickens will do this when they are warning the flock of possible danger. It sounds like a purr or mid range growl. If a Hawk is seen in the sky, squirrels are getting too close or the dog is lingering close to the run, they make this noise to alert the flock to be on guard for danger.

She seems laboured but not open-mouthes when she breathes because her whole body moves. I didn't hear it yesterday, it obviously developed overnight. I am going to try to oil her and rub the crop, in case it is a blockage.

Something in the crop will not cause breathing noises. Don't give her oil. Oil is not good for a crop. She could have something stuck in her airways. This will cause honking. She may eventually honk it out of her.

We will see how she fares throughout the day-she still eats and just laid and egg. The noise sounds to me like the sounds baby crows make when they are being fed so I think it's something down her trachea. Sigh. Time to get the flashlight out tonight and see about opening her mouth to check. Any advice on that? I did look at the ER page, haven't noticed anything like that
