This morning I noticed something up with my 6 year old cream legbar, she was sort of purring while breathing and panting/ gasping for air, I though she had something lodged in her throat so I gave her some olive oil and massaged her which seemed to help a little at first but it’s been 3 hours and she is snoring/ honking like a goose and is very tired. It sounds like she’s in pain. This morning was the one morning I wasn’t there to let her out and feed her (someone else did it) so I have only seen her since she’s been like this, the person who saw her said they didn’t notice anything and she was eating. She is still eating a little but not drinking. The vets are closed as it’s sunday but I’m terrified of losing her. Anyone else had this happen? I want to upload a video of the sound but it says file too large.

I had this happen years ago with a blue Ameraucana hen who had just laid her first egg in a year. It sounded like she was breathing around a reed. I brought her in the house away from the other birds and called a breeder friend I know who is also an NPIP tester for my state and he said she may have blown an air sac while straining to lay after such a long time, or she may have a piece of straw/hay stuck in her throat, to give her a little couple drops of oil in her beak and massage her throat. I did that and by morning, no more noise. Apparently, it was something stuck that she was breathing around.

My friend had a hen who would dunk her head when drinking then honk for hours, too, for another possibility. Maybe she aspirated some water or a piece of scratch grain.

Thank you that sounds like it makes sense although she hasn’t laid her first egg of the year yet, I hope it’s not too serious

Here is the link to a video of her so you can hear it rather than me describing it. She’s still the same, although has drank a little bit now.

I once had a hen with a birch tree seed stuck in her nose, causing her to breathe weirdly and sneeze a lot. With the help of my dad we managed to remove the seed from the squirmy hen's nose and she was fine after that.

I also once had a quail who kept making gagging motions and her crop didn't go down as it should... I gave her some oil and whatever was lodged in her throat and blocking her crop, likely a long piece of hay, passed through and she went back to normal.
