Welcome to BYC!
You have come to the right place for great people and great information. Everyone is is always willing to help in any way they can!
I just (i say just, its been a year) moved back to florida from southen oklahoma, both are hot amd FL is wet. If you have the right set up you shouldnt have a problem with smell. My coop(you can check it out in the link under my name) is a tuffshed devided in half, half for them half for me(untill i build the nursery bays) and all the pine shaving that i clean out of the coop go into the run. Your run will be muddy when it rains until the shavings build up. But once they build up you are golden. My 11 ducks sleep in the run at night and it doesnt stink one bit(that amazing with ducks, they are messy!) I feed them in the run so tbey will scratch up the shaving and turn them over daily. Works amazing.
I actually do this with my quail pens too(want to talk about stink!! ) and it keeps their smell down like 95% its an amazing prosses.
Chickens are amaing in everyway to me there are no cons. All animals are work no matter where you live. Its all in how you view it. If you love the animals and dont mind the work you are going to love them. Its all a learning experiences amd you will learn what works for you and your location.
And for your husband just have to tell him the thousands of ways to use their eggs!! So yummy and fresh and make any meal that much better!
Also check out the Learning Center, it has tons of great information of all kind. Hatching, raising and houseing for all your feather friends!
ENJOY!!!
