Chicken waterer

The general idea is good. I wouldn't get the translucent bucket. Light getting in will allow algae to grow in the bucket. If you have a local hardware store (Home Depot, Lowes, etc), you should be able to find that type of bucket for much less.

As for leaks, be sure to use plumbers tape to help prevent leaks. If you do end up with a problem, you'll have plenty of replacement nipples.

Oh, interesting. I wanted it to be translucent so I would see the water level. The waterer I have now is from tsc and it is translucent, is it the same with that? Plumbers tape is a good idea! Thanks.

And I picked that one because it’s food grade, and I’m sure the ones from Home Depot and others aren’t. Is that not something to worry about?

Just checked and both Lowes and HD both have food grade options. As for your current waterer, just keep an eye out for algae growth. If/when you see algae, you'll want to give it a thorough cleaning to kill it.

As for the advantage to translucent, that's meh at best. You'll get a feel for how long it takes your chickens to use the water. Popping the top to check water level is trivial. Depending on how many birds you have, the 5 gallon may even be too large. My 2 gallon waterer lasts a good while between refills for my smallish flock.

Oh, I didn’t know that!

Yeah, 5 gallons will last a while for me, but I’m thinking for when we are out of town for a week or longer.

There are plusses and minuses to each. I like the first (Doublewood) because it has a slight depression/cup on the lower lip to catch water for the chickens.

I like the wingnut for the LilClucker to help hold it in place, but it appears to have a flat lower lip which won't hold water well. Also, I don't trust the square install tool. Plastic threads are easy to strip so I'd prefer to hand-tighten the nipples.

You might consider this set which appears to have a better combination with a lower lip cup, rear wingnuts and a good rating.

------

One additional item to keep in mind. Using nipples makes it a little harder for your chickens to get water. This isn't a problem most of the time, but when it gets hot, I'll offer a secondary waterer (a bowl) that they can dip their wattles into for cooling and drink deeply. The nipple system requires less maintenance, but the bowl is helpful in summer.

I know I can’t use it while it’s freezing,
There is a heated nipple waterer available. I've used this one for the past 2 years. It will stay unfrozen in below zero temps.
I put it away after winter and get out the non heated ones.
