I have a 6 week old silkie orpington chick whose wing fell off. I know this sounds crazy but hear me out... Let me tell you first that when she hatched she had a hard time getting off of her back for the first day and a half. When she was about 4 weeks old I noticed that she was dragging her wings and losing feathers from her wings. Also, they looked like they had been bleeding. I thought that some of the other chickens may have been pecking her and treated her with blue coat. I sprayed her a few times with the blue coat because her wings still seemed to be oozing a little bit. Other than the wings she was now acting fine so I kind of just let her be with the other chicks and her mom. Well today I noticed that her wing had fallen off in the run! The whole wing snapped off right through the bone. There was no blood or anything. We inspected the chick and noticed that where the wing fell off the chick has a nub that looks healed. We also noticed that the other wing looked like it was forming a nub so I am guessing this one is going to snap off too. Again she is acting fine but I have never heard of chicken wings falling off... it is sort of blowing my mind. Anyone know anything about this?

WOW!!! I've never even heard of such a thing before and I was a Vet. Tech. many moons ago. All's I can say is that abnormal limbs and deformities do really happen in human children too, and that as long as she's not in pain and adapting well to her 'winglessness'...more power to her (and you). Chickens don't need to fly anywhere anymore anyway. They have us to move them around the farm. That's what we're here for anyway, isn't it...to comfort our little creatures with endless creature comforts. That's what I'm in it for anyway...

Thats bizarre! I have seen others post things about chickens loosing limbs from frost bite but that doesn't seem like the case with your bird. Sounds like she may have just been born with the problem. If it were my chicken I would put antibiotic cream on it and monitor her for signs of infection/progression of limb loss. I would also be very vigilent in making sure no one else is picking on her. As long as she isn't in pain and nothing is infected I would assume she should be fine. She will just be a little unique now

I can only guess that if she was injured she might have suffered from a reduced blood supply to the wing and therefore it has died and demarcated.
She will need to either have a low roost or a nest to sleep in.
I echo the above posters that you should be very vigilant and protective over her.

I do hope she is ok.
Best wishes x
