Chicken with HOLE under wing and fishy smell

When checking the nesting boxes tonight for eggs I noticed a fishy odor. One of my chickens who is currently broody has a “wound” under her right wing that is filled with brown hard secretion. it looks almost scabbed over, and the “hole” doesn’t look like an injury. it looks like it’s been there forever. there is no blood or torn tissue. one portion of it looks like a scab and the deeper portion looks like the brown stuff is coming out of the chicken. pictures are graphic:

it’s extremely difficult to explain, please look at my photos. i’m not sure if i should chip away the the brown stuff to reveal what is underneath. i’ve never heard of or seen anything like this please help! she is about 1 year old and has her back feathers plucked from mating. maybe his was a puncture wound from a rooster and has become infected has turned into this? the area doesn’t appear to be red or swollen.

That looks like a horrific wound from mating. I've seen them that bad in my turkeys but not my chickens. You will need to check your rooster and trim nails and spurs. If he's young I might remove him for a while.

Do you have any betadine, chlorhexidene, or other disinfectant? I would take warm water and disinfectant or dishwater soap and clean the wound well, getting it wet and really getting it cleaned up. You might find that a kitchen faucet spayer might clean it well. Then coat it with plain Nesoporin or Triple Antibiotic Ointment twice a day after cleaning. Separate her in a dog crate with food and water, and try to keep her away from flies which can cause maggot infestation.

yes i have betadine and ointment in my flock first aid kit. i will clean her up now. i've made some of the girls chicken saddles but it rains so much i don’t like them going to roost with a wet back. it’s so scary to look at! i’ll have to check all my chickens tomorrow in detail. since the wound smells does that mean it’s infected? does TSC sell antibiotics that i can use? thanks for the reply!

Tomorrow take your rooster and dull his spurs by trimming them bluntly with dog nails clippers, and file them smoothe. Check them every couple of weeks.

Get her a chicken saddle with wing covers. Mine has a problem like that on her sides, but not that bad!
