Hey guys I found my chicken who’s only 2 months old and it struggles to open it’s eye, looks a little swollen and had bubbles a few days ago. I have been cleaning it regularly and giving eye drops. It kinda looks like coryza but I’m not sure, could anyone be of assistance, with identifying what’s wrong or possible treatments that don’t involve surgery or a vet. 4E83FB51-9A19-4F6D-990F-DFA89129D8C2.jpeg

Poor guy. To treat that, make sure you are up to date with any worming treatments and coccidiosis treatments.

I treat with antibiotics, sometimes at the same time as anti-cocci medicine, I isolate the sick one in a cage and give medicated water containing antibiitic and anticocci. I use medicines that are available to me in Peru where I live. I think being in the United States your best bet is Tylosin, a respiratory antibiotic.

Is he the only sick one in your flock?

It sounds like mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG,) a chronic respiratory disease. Where did the chicken come from? Have you seen any similar symptoms before in another older chicken? Have you added any new birds recently? I would get some Tylan 50 injectable or Tylosin powder for the water, and start treatment. Coryza is said to have a bad odor from the beak, and is treated with sulfa antibiotics. Unfortunately, most respiratory diseases in chickens can make them carriers.

well I’ve never heard of any of those tylosin since I’m from Australia but I’ve never had this come up in a chicken before, I got the eggs from a neighbor and haven’t seen it start in any one else it’s been with them since hatch and I’ve still got it with the rest, the swelling went up since I took the photo and poor thing can’t get its eye open. I’m just worried to do something wrong since I saw people online having to cut to remove an infection. I’ve been giving it antibiotics in its water for a few days some for literally everything cocci, mg and coryza I’m not sure what else to do :( it’s still happy running around and eating and drinking

There could be debris in her eye. You can flush her eye with saline solution and apply a small dab of antibiotic ointment in her eye for a few days and see if there's improvement.
Another possibility is that she may have been pecked in or around her eye causing the swelling. An inflammatory medication may help, that and time.
Hopefully she is eating and drinking normally.

So update here on this little chick, had made improvement the swelling went down almost completely and the bubbles went away for a bit but it keeps scratching at its eye and if it does it enough then the bubble come back. Could it just be that it’s allergic to something. Oh and another two got bubbles in their eyes but they disappeared overnight on their own. I have two options, one is to continue what I’ve been doing by giving silver and applying terramycin powder or give it antibiotics for coryza again although didn’t see much good corn from them the last time. Any ideas anyone

This is what it looks like when it’s sleeping. You can see it managed to pull a bit of its eye lid off. But it’s still happy little chook running around stealing everyone’s food. It is heaps better than it was

What have you been using to treat it? With 2 others having the eye bubbles, it sounds like mycoplasma (MG.) Have you checked with your vet about getting tylosin? Other antibiotics that will treat MG are oxyteracycline, tiamulin (Denagard,) and Baytril. Here is a good article about MG:

They had it before this little fella, there isn’t a vet near by and finding one which knows about chickens is impossible I know more than any vets here but this just had me baffled in what to do and the cheapest consult is $70 I do not have that kind of money to spend. I’ve been treating it with colloidal silver which had been working until it tore its eye lid which resulted in the bubbles coming back and a little swelling around the eye I thought maybe it’s just irritation and a result of the tear which would have hurt.

I would use antibiotic ointment in the eye. Terramycin is good, and Triple Antibiotic Ointment or Neosporin will work. You can get Tylosin here without a prescription and dosage is 1 tsp per gallon of water for 5 days:

If you can find Tylan 50 injectable in your local feed store, it can be given 0.25 ml per pound 3 times a day orally for 5 days. You will need a syringe and needle to get it out of the vial, then remove the needle and give it orally.
