Hi I am posting this question for a friend of mine. She has a chicken that has suddenly gone blind. The chicken was sitting on eggs and she had been sitting for only a couple days when suddenly she went blind. She has swollen lids , black eye, no mis shape of the pupils, no Grey eye, but completely black.she was eating and drinking fine while setting and is still eating and drinking but is blind! I've tried to reasearch this but I've came up with nothing. Does any one know what this may be and the cause/cure? Please help

it says briefly on a search engine that it could be the result of a respiratory disease or conjunctivitis, or she was pecked in the eyes by another whilst she was sitting...? Where abouts is she in the pecking order? Near the bottom? Could it be that another hen wanting to lay an egg pecked her to try and get her to move?x

Purplesqurriel....I'm the one realsis posted for....she was in a pen alone except for her little sister....as far as I know she was not pecked at all..do I need to start her on an antibiotic?... if so what type?....her eylids are a little swollen...she has no other sign of being sick at all...she is eating and drinking on her own....thanks...please help i dont want to loose her...she is a little silky...

No it was impossible for her to be pecked as she was seprated. Thank you for answering .. That was my first question to my friend. Also no signs of respiratory illness. Her only symptoms are swollen eye lids and blindness. I was also considering if it could be a severe case of conjunctivitis. But would that on set suddenly and strike them blind instantly?

Purplesqurriel....she can see directly in front of her...she is eating and drinking on her own with the help of her little sister...her pupils ate both solid black...she cannot see around her ......I have cut her crest back to see if that help.....but no luck......i keep her food and water direcly in front of her...I have her on vit b complex and poly visol without iron....thank u for responding....

I had a dog that had the total black eyes, the vet said that was pigment keratitis - it had to be lasered off. I don't think they do that to chickens. This was quite a while ago.

A specialist said the pigment forms to protect the eye after some damage. Which is weird because it prevents them from seeing. I don't think it was sudden with our dog - can't be sure because she wasn't the friendliest dog - so you couldn't get close and look at her eyes.
