I was curious about the laws on keeping chickens here in Centennial, CO, and also if pheasants or quail were allowed also...they can be hard to find and understand sometimes. What I found was mixed, some said you can only have four, others said six and you can't have roosters over the age of six months, and some just spoke of animal numbers and if they count towards them, but no real specifics. I'm lost and my grandma is curious since she's debating on keeping a small chicken coop. I love chickens myself, they're neat and it'd be a treat to care for them! I used to help out with a friends, he had a mean rooster who adored me and nobody else. lol

Anyways, we're not getting any anytime soon, but we are thinking about it. A ton of research must be done first obviously, but I'd like to know all the specifics of the laws in the area if anyone would mind helping me out finding them, or clarifying which are current.

City of Centennial 2011 Land Development Code

Articel 2, Divisions 2-4, Sec 12-2-420 Residential Agriculture Overlay District, B (1b).

"An unlimited number of rabbits, chickens, geese, or other small agricultural animals or fowl that are not defined in the animal equivalent unit table set forth in Article 16 and have an average per animal weight of less than 10 pounds, are permitted except that the keeping of roosters over the age of six months shall be prohibited."

I did a lot of research on every applicable governing entity before perusing this hobby. The main on to check with is your HOA if you live in one, because they will be the ones who care the most. Hope that helps.

I have gotten 2 notices in the past 2 days from the city of Centennial stating an officer will be out everyday until the issue is resolved. I have called and left a message with the city. My chickens are only 2.5-3 months old. I hatched them myself and a few have turned out to be roosters. I believe the rule is that roosters are prohibited AFTER the age of 6 months. I would appreciate not being harassed for another 3 months. I will find other homes for them at that time.

Is this code still in effect? It suggests that ducks are permitted in the city. Centennial Municipal code chapter 7 article 7 340 suggests no ducks.
Can anyone offer advice about ducks?...if someone had them for a longtime, could they be grandfathered in?
Thanks,

Steve K,

The part of the land use code you are referring to seems to define a special “residential agricultural overlay district” separate from regular residential districts. I would check the city’s zoning map to figure out what your property is classified as.

https://www.centennialco.gov/Centennial-Maps/Zoning-Map

From the map descriptions, it looks like RAO lots are at least two acres, along with some other requirements. The site says the RAO classification was created specifically to help properties keep their historic use, so if you have a pretty big chunk of land maybe you will get lucky! Let us know.
