Chicks Wasting Food?!

Do you have a problem with feed spilling?

  • Nope. My chicks would never think of making a mess.

  • Yes. There's more food on the ground than in the feeder.

Chicks are very inconsiderate and do not bother trying to keep things tidy in the brooder. Bedding is tossed in the water, food gets scratched out all over the floor and poop lands on everything.

I had almost forgotten (since my last batch of babies) how a full feeder is so much fun for chicks to play in. But I have an easy fix that works with small brooder setups.

I like to raise the food and water up on a platform of some sort.
e.g. bricks, up-side-down bowl or cake pan, a board (2x4 pictured but 2x6 might be better), cinder block for bigger chicks. The water has remained relatively clean so far and they haven't started pooping on everything yet, but I know that raising the food and water helps prevent the majority of defilement as time goes on. A taller platform will be needed as chicks grow to keep their butts (literally) out of it. Water should still be changed at least once a day.

My other tried and true solution is to just not fill it full. Ok, it's not groundbreaking news, but it works. And yes, you have to fill it more often, but food isn't wasted. And no matter how much you want to believe they will clean it all up off the floor, they won't. Especially if it's mixed in with bedding.

I filled the basin a little over halfway and put a small jar on top. It's not the right size to screw in, but it keeps chicks from climbing over (and pooping in) the center.

Chicks will still try to scoop and scratch out the feed, but they will FAIL!! Here's my little darlings trying their best at crumble flinging:

Disclaimer: this method may not be practical if you have a bazillion chicks or use a different style feeder. I take no responsibility for what your own crazy birds do.

I have the same feeder, I took a water bottle and cut out the center. I then put it in the top part to extend it down into the holder. It sits about 1/4 inch from bottom of holder. Keeps the holder from filling up, but you can still fill the cup.

There's few good ideas in this thread, one of which I am trying out..chicks are just hatching today so it hasn't been tested yet.

Oh yes, I see how that feeder would keep the food at the right level (shallow!) while being able to actually FILL it. Thanks for the link. I see a modification coming on!

Thanks @blackdog043 for posting your directions!

What is this made from... yogurt container?
It looks effective, I like it.

I put my food and wateer on a platform, but now that the chiks are big, they nock everything over and kick bedding and poop all over! Good thing they're moving outside full time soon! Good ideas though!

I see the clear part of the water bottle, but what is the black part there?

All you guys have the same great idea! A much better solution... thank you!!

Yeah, chicks are clumsy buggers when they get big! What are you using for a platform? The single cinderblock worked well for me because it was as tall as their necks and it wasn't wider than the feeder base so they couldn't climb on top. But my chicks leave the brooder to be with the rest of the flock by 5 weeks, so they're not full size yet to cause real damage, but big enough to use the adult feeders.

Hmmm, I don't see why a similar version of my big feeder couldn't be made for chicks... out of 2" pvc pipe and fittings instead of 4 inch.

but it would probably have to be attached to a wall and wouldn't have as many openings, so... never mind.
