I agree, I live in England and so English Orpington’s are common, and well suited to the environment, I would recommend the English strain rather than the American because the English strain has better characteristics than the American ones which infact can be flighty as they aren’t as heavy. Whereas the English strain can hardly get off the groundI've only seen Chocolate English Orpingtons.
EO's are the sweetest, quietest chickens you could ever have.
The roosters do crow, of course, and being bigger they tend to have a deep voice, but I find that much more pleasant than shrill roosters.
The hens don't make much noise around egg laying, in my experience. Many operate in stealth mode.
Sometimes, hatchery stock Orpingtons can have non-typey demeanors, but that's due to the influence of other breeds they have used to increase egg production / decrease broodiness. So it really matters where you get your stock.
The english orpingtons are definitely better IMO!I agree, I live in England and so English Orpington’s are common, and well suited to the environment, I would recommend the English strain rather than the American because the English strain has better characteristics than the American ones which infact can be flighty as they aren’t as heavy. Thats the best advice ever!!Basically if your having a bad day- the answer to that is “go and cuddle and Orpington”![]()
