Hello,
I know you guys get asked this A LOT... so thank you for anyone taking the time to read or reply to this post. Apologies if the photos are a little blurry or not fully clear - those heads don't half bob quickly!
I have 5 chickens (getting more soon!), three of which I am pretty certain I know the gender for, another one I am almost certain, but the last one has me stumped! Any help would be appreciated. So here are the flock members...
Meet Nugget - cockerel Cream Crested Legbar. He looks the man, and he crows regularly. And we had him sussed when he was fresh out of his shell! (Auto-sexing breed)
Meet Nutmeg - pullet Cream Crested Legbar. Nugget follows her every move! Her favourite thing to do (apart from consuming food) is riding on my shoulders.
Meet Freckles - French Silver Cuckoo Marans - I believe a pullet - would love your opinion? This chicken has the sweetest disposition, and has a particular fondness for lap-time and dandelions with her favourite human - my youngest daughter (10yo). Her nickname is the 'Camping Kettle', as she constantly whistles and sounds like she is boiling!!
And now the two Araucanas.... the difficult to sex ones... Jade (Black Araucana) and Opal (Lavender Aracana). We believe Opal is a he, as he is top chicken and even sends Nugget running. I have heard him crow once, several weeks ago. Note, these are British standard Araucanas, and therefore look different to American Araucanas. But Jade has us stumped. Her nature and smaller pea-comb make us think Pullet, but her tail is beautiful and developing what look like saddle feathers?? And her feet are not noticeably smaller than Opals... But maybe she just wears a bigger shoe size?!
Opinions on Jade and Opal really appreciated please. Here they are...Jade first:
And now Opal...
Thanks again to anyone who read this far!
